The BlackBerry PlayBook caught a lot of flack when it launched because it lacked apps that seemed central to the functions of a business tablet – contacts, email and calendar. RIM has been working on adding these features in PlayBook OS 2.0, which rumor has it is finally launching on February 17.

Transformer Prime users suffering from GPS issues can now hopefully get some help. We say hopefully, because the latest OTA bugfix update is leaving many users still suffering from GPS woes (and unrooted, among other things).

Windows 8 tablets will be put through the same strict regime as Windows Phone 7 devices as to what hardware goes in them and what OEMs are allowed to put.

This was to be expected from Redmond, as the company has set a goal to keep solid user experience across its different devices. Interestingly enough, Microsoft seems to be allowing both tablets and convertibles (i.e. ASUS Transformer Prime) to run its tablet version of Windows 8. Read more »

Kindle Fire users are reporting that an OTA update is rolling out, bringing the Kindle Fire software version up to v6.2.2. Amazon still hasn’t officially announced it though.

The first proper Android tablet is finally getting its long overdue serving of Ice Cream Sandwich. Users in the US with the Wi-Fi-only model have reported the presence of an over the air update that upgrades their Xooms to the latest version of Android.

ASUS has put up a post on their official blog asking their users to return their Transformer Prime TF201 for a full refund in case they are not satisfied with the GPS performance. For those who have decided to stick with it, they will be offering an extended warranty, taking it up to 18 months.

LG has announced a new tablet for its homeland called the Optimus Pad LTE. Compared to the regular Optimus Pad, there are quite a few differences, other than the inclusion of LTE.

For starters, the design is new. The Optimus Pad LTE is thinner at just 9.34mm compared to the 12.7mm thickness of the non-LTE version. It’s also lighter at just 497g compared to the 621g of the Optimus Pad. Other changes include a larger 6,800mAh battery, which is up by 400mAh over the standard version despite the reduced thickness and weight, dual-core 1.5GHz Qualcomm processor that replaces the Nvidia Tegra 2 processor on the non-LTE model and a simpler 8 megapixel camera instead of the dual 5 megapixel 3D camera on the back. When Apple announced that they will be having an education announcement on Thursday in New York, the general consensus was that they will be announcing digital textbooks for their iOS devices, particularly the iPad, which is becoming increasingly popular in schools and colleges.

However, according to some new information from Ars Technica, that may not be the only thing that they will be announcing on Thursday. According to their sources, Apple will also be releasing tools for creation of ebooks, which Ars dubs it as the “GarageBand for books”. Read more »

The Acer Iconia Tab A700 may have gotten most of the attention at CES, but the A510 was also there. It’s a 10.1″ tablet powered by a quad-core NVIDIA Tegra 3 and running Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich – so far, just like the A700. The big difference is that the screen has only 1280×800 resolution (rather than the 1920×1200 resolution of the A700).

Anyway, the Iconia Tab A510 features a 5MP main camera and 2MP video-call camera. It has lost the full-size USB port that the A500 had but keeps the microHDMI port. Read more »

Yes, yes, we know Sony’s Tablet P and Tablet S aren’t exactly hot or new in the tech world, but even a few months after their market release they are still quite interesting.

Sony put a lot of effort into differentiating its two tablets from the pack of Android slates out there and it’s done a really good job. The MediaPad aims to join the exclusive company of tablets currently Android’s latest OS, 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. Huawei plans to release all new MediaPad’s with Android 4.0, with an update for current users coming later on this year.

Huawei coupled this announcement with the introduction of its MediaPad Color version, coming in Classic Brown, Shadow Black, and Passion Pink. Read more »

Last week ASUS announced that the original Transformer TF101 will be receiving the ICS update shortly after the Transformer Prime got it. They even confirmed it later on their Facebook page that the update will, in fact, be released today.

Later however that update was pulled down from the account and replaced with a proper statement saying that the original Transformer will in fact be getting the ICS update around end of this month, along with an apology for giving the wrong date earlier and invariably getting everyone’s hopes up.
