FaceTime won’t work even on new iPad’s fast LTE connection

by 62 comments

FaceTime caused a lot of “oohs” and “aahs” but there are still problems with it – like needing a Wi-Fi connection for it to work. Even if you have blazing fast LTE connection on your shiny new iPad, you still can’t do a FaceTime call.

It has already been pointed out that using the iPad as a Wi-Fi hotspot and connecting an iPhone 4/4S to it to do a FaceTime is one way to get around this restriction, but that’s hardly an ideal solution and it certainly won’t work for everyone. Read more »

Prepare to act surprised. The Nokia head designer Marko Ahtisaari reportedly confirmed that his company is working on a tablet. What’s more, Mr. Ahtisaari says that he has dedicated no less than a third of his working time to the project in order to make the device stand out in the crowd.

Reuters reports that Nokia still hasn’t joined the tablet party due to the company’s wish to offer a product that’s easy to differentiate. Read more »

Tesco website glitch prices the new iPad at just £50

by 6 comments

A trip to the supermarket can be filled with special offers like “buy one get one free” or “two for the price of one”, but how about an iPad for just £50.

Tesco Value iPad, apparently not

What some may see as the sale of the century, supermarket retailer Tesco see as a technical blunder on their part. Due to a glitch on the chain’s website, thousands of customers were fooled into thinking that a new 64GB WiFi/4G iPad was available to purchase for just £49.99. Read more »

Kindle Fire steals some market share, but iPad is still king of tablets in Q4, IDC reports

by 18 comments

The analysts from IDC just published their report on the global tablet market in the last quarter of last year and it appears that the picture was pretty much what we saw throughout 2011. Android is improving rapidly, but Apple’s iOS is still the king of the hill, accounting for more than half of all sales.

Apple managed to ship 15.4 million units in Q4 of last year, which secured them a market share of 54.7% (down from 61.5% in Q3). The best performer of the quarter was obviously the Amazon Kindle Fire, which got a share of 16.8% even though it was only on sale for a month and a half. Read more »

Apple could rack up an $11 billion bill with Samsung before 2012 is out

by 71 comments

With all the market rivalry, patent lawsuits and sly televisual marketing going on between Samsung and Apple, you’d be forgiven for thinking all ties between these two companies would have already been severed at this heavily tumultuous stage in their relationship, but at the end of the day business is business and both these big names know that need to work together to make money.

Apple will owe Samsung a lot of money before the end of 2012

The likes of LG and Sharp were initially entrusted with creating displays for Apple’s newest tablet, set to touch down in a couple of days, but when they were unable to deliver due to manufacturing issues, Apple passed the task to Samsung who will now be producing the new iPad’s QXGA display panels (for the time being at least). The third generation Apple iPad will officially ship out to customers in three days time but a lucky Vietnamese site has caught an early look at the device and have an unboxing video prepped.

iPad Mini rumors refuse to go away, promise smaller bezel and lower price this time

by 42 comments

This rumor is proving harder to kill than most fictional characters – I’m talking about the iPad Mini rumor. It reappeared again, just days after Apple’s official announcement of the new iPad when Apple’s exec made no mentions of any such thing.

The diminutive iPad is said to have a small bezel so that it can be about the same size as 7″ Android tablets (Kindle Fire, Galaxy Tab 2 7.0, etc.), while having a slightly larger screen diagonal – 7.85″ according to chitchat. Read more »

Nokia to release a Snapdragon-powered 10″ Windows 8 tablet in Q4

by 121 comments

We’ve heard so many rumors of Nokia jumping on the tablet bandwagon that we are not sure what to believe anymore, but this latest bit sound rather plausible. The Finns are reportedly working on a 10″ slate running Windows 8, which should arrive to the market by the end of the year.

The Nokia tablet will be powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 chipset, featuring a couple of Krait CPU cores. The production of the device itself will be outsourced to the Taiwanese company Compal Electronics and initial volumes are said to be the rather modest 200,000 units. Read more »

Overwhelming demand depletes new iPad stock, shipment date for new buyers slides back

by 41 comments

The new iPad was announced last week with a planned launch date this Friday. Overwhelming demand has already pushed that date back, so if you haven’t pre-ordered already, the soonest you can hope to get the newest Apple tablet is March 19 (and there’s a two iPads per customer limit).

You could, of course, line up at a brick and mortar store, where you should be able to find the new iPad in stock on launch day (March 16). But that means joining an extraordinary long queue and being mocked by your Samsung-wielding buddies. Read more »

Based on some educated estimations made by analysts at UBM TechInsights, a 16GB 4G LTE variant of Apple’s newest iPad should work out to about $310 in components.

Asus Padfone to cost 700 pounds in the UK, keyboard dock and tablet included

by 39 comments

Back at CES, Asus unveiled its $250 quad-core Memo tablet and got everyone quite excited by the possibility to have a powerful tablet with a proper OS on the cheap. Then came the cold shower and the news that the Memo won’t be available in the UK, as Asus believes the Padfone will be better suited to that market.

Those led some of us to believe that the Asus Padfone price will be at least close to what the Memo will be going for, but here comes another disappointment. According to reports, based on insider information, the Padfone will hit British stores costing £699.98. Read more »

The competition reacts to the new iPad, Nvidia and Samsung aren’t happy

by 119 comments

Usually, new Apple product announcements generate lots of commotion and make a stir in the tech community. The new iPad unveiling is another case in point, but this time Samsung and Nvidia have something to say for themselves in response to Apple’s claims on the iPad event yesterday.

Samsung has felt the need to make a short comparison table, not close to our in-depth one, and put their Galaxy Note 10.1 and the new iPad face to face and see how they differ on some key (according to Samsung) points. Nvidia on the other hand, feel that the comparison between their Tegra 3 chip and the Apple’s A5X won’t win any awards for authenticity. Read more »
