You’d be surprised to know, battery life tests are the most time consuming and the most criticized articles that we do. And in the same time, they are of high interest to the readers. The previous iteration of our battery test required that we have the phone around for at least a week after the reviewing routine is over. It included many different tasks, which took quite a lot of time and meant that the tested devices couldn’t be used for anything else for days in a row (so that the test is as controlled as possible).
And with so many tasks involved, many of you found it hard to compare our testing scenario to their typical usage. It was hard to persuade those of you that never give their smartphones a rest that it’s possible to use a phone for two days without recharging it. Read more »
Today our Facebook page reached the 100,000 milestone and we thought it would be a good time to stop for a second and thank you guys for all the support. And the fact that cool 100,000 of you have expressed their support for us in the past year and a half is only a part of the story.
It’s also because of you, our loyal readers that we are now one of the largest cell phone websites worldwide – our servers are now serving close to 6 million pages per day. According to the independent internet statistic company Alexa, recently we even managed to become one of the top 500 websites globally. Read more »
We are just back from the GSMArena.com lab, where our hard-working coders do their magic and we have some good news for you. The Phone Finder section of our website has just been updated and you will, hopefully, find it much more useful now.
We’ve added searching by several new criteria – the ones that are probably most important in picking your next cell phone. You can now filter the nearly 4000 handsets in our database by processor clock speed and number of cores, as well as available RAM and internal storage. Read more »
Display quality is climbing higher and higher on the priority list of everyone in the search for a new handset, so we thought it would only be fair if we give it more coverage in our reviews. That’s why we have just expanded the display section with another, more scientific test that should help you get a better impression of each unit.
Contrast ratio is the most important aspect of the performance of each display – deep blacks and bright colors is what everyone wants to have on their next handset. However manufacturers usually don’t list the exact specs and even if they do, they post misleading numbers that don’t reflect real-life performance accurately.
That’s why we decided it would be best if we started measuring that ourselves. From now on, you will see a new table in each of our reviews quoting the exact luminance levels (brightness) of white and black colors and the contrast ratio for every handset. Read more »
A couple of weeks ago we introduced our new Photo Compare Tool and since then we’ve been working hard to fill up its database with more samples to make it all the more useful. We are now pleased to announce the first series of new additions, lead by the third 12MP cameraphone Sony Ericsson Satio and the only 8MP WP7 device HTC 7 Mozart.
The other handset to have debuted in the PCT is the HTC HD7 (its review is due today). We have also added Read more »
You might have experienced some performance hiccups with GSMArena.com over the past 48 hours. We have been under a massive DDoS attack in that time and while we are doing our best to keep the servers alive further problems accessing the site are still likely.
The attack involves over 20000 zombie computers so far, which in the first 24 hours alone sent more requests than we have received for the past 10 years combined. Read more »
It has been some time since we last reviewed a Windows Mobile-running smartphone, but here comes the HTC HD mini to right this wrong. We just received our review unit and as usual we are going to show you a couple of videos so you know what to expect.
The HTC HD mini might be a lot more compact than the HTC HD2 but in general terms it’s just slightly smaller than average. Read more »
On this day, exactly 25 years ago Symbolics computers of Cambridge, Massachusetts, registered the first web address, ending in dotcom. Five more companies dared to go in the dotcom area that same year and nothing suggested the avalanche that was to follow.
Twelve years later the millionth dotcom domain got registered and now there are 668 000 dotcom sites registered every month. In the meantime the world saw the rise of dotcom websites that defined the internet as we know it today.
Google.com (15 September 1997), Yahoo.com (18 January 1995), Facebook.com (29 March 1997) and Twitter (21 January 2000) are probably visited by most of you on a daily basis and one can hardly imagine what the internet would be like without them. Read more »
The ones that have been paying attention have certainly noticed there’s a certain new feature in our reviews. For the rest of you, we decided to do a quick tutorial how it works so you can get 100% our of interacting with it.
Starting yesterday we have introduced new image zooming system for the camera samples that should hopefully make it easier to browse all the camera samples that we publish for each handset when reviewing it over at GSMArena.com.
Magic Touch zooming now provides more natural and intuitive control on the level of zoom of those images. Once you click on an image thumbnail just wait for the downsized preview to fully load (this is important for the whole thing to work out) and you’ll then get ALL the benefit of a much more advanced zooming and panning system. More details after the break.
