A leaked prototype of the upcoming iPad 5 from Apple had suggested that the slate would sport an iPad Mini-like design. Now, the aluminum back housing of the fifth-generation iPad has surfaced and confirms that the device would indeed resemble the iPad Mini.

This means that the Apple iPad 5 will come out with a much thinner side bezel, making the device more compact. The Cupertino giant has also managed to reduce the width of its fifth-gen iPad and the upcoming tablet reportedly measures 168mm – which is about 0.7 inches narrower than the iPad 4, which stands at 185.7mm. If you have used the Amazon Kindle app on iOS, you’d have noticed that there is no way to actually search and purchase books from within the app itself and you would have to do that from Amazon’s website whereas the same is completely possible from Apple’s own iBookstore.

Apple charges 30 percent of in-app purchases for all the apps on the App Store, an amount Amazon would have to pay if they enabled purchasing Kindle books through their app. This is something they wanted to avoid, which is why there was no option to purchase books in the iOS app. That is until now, in a way. The Android platform continues its dominance in tablet market with its shipments reaching 24.2 million in the second quarter of 2013. According to a research from Strategy Analytics, Android currently has 67 % of the tablet market, while the Apple owned iOS has declined to 28%. Windows is also on the rise, but has only managed to secure a 4.5% slice so far.

The tablet market has seen a new rise with the overall shipments reaching 36.2 million in Q2, 2013. That’s of course, a significant gain over the same period last year, when 24.6 million tablets were shipped. Read more »

Apple reported that iPad sales had declined in the company’s third fiscal quarter this year from 17 million last year to 14.6 million. Now analysts from Citi Research say that Apple’s tablets will continue to lose market share even when the new iPad 5 and new iPad mini are announced.

Opposite to the iPad’s decline, the overall tablet market was on the rise during the third quarter. The expectation for the fourth quarter is for iPads to decline 7% year on year. Read more »

The Colin McRae Rally series is the epitome of rallying games. The very first game came out back in 1998 and although the series has largely stuck to consoles and the PC, there have been a few versions for handheld device along the way.

The very first Colin McRae game that I played was actually Colin McRae Rally 2005 for the N-Gage. This might sound strange for anyone who hasn’t owned an N-Gage but it was an utterly fantastic game that set the benchmark really high for me for mobile racing games. The latest iteration in the series, named simply Colin McRae Rally, is now available on iOS devices and has rather large shoes to fill. Let’s see if it manages to do that. Read more »

The GoPro Hero3 action camera was launched about a year ago and has gained some serious traction among extreme sports enthusiasts. Combining a rugged build with some serious video capture credentials the Hero3 has got the attention of the folks from DxO Labs, who have done their set of scientific tests on it.

As a fun experiment they even decided to compare the action camera to that of the Apple’s iPhone 5 and see which one does better with stills and videos. The comparison looks appropriate considering the fact that the iPhone 5 is still one of the more capable smartphone shooters around. Read more »

Rovio has begun the global rollout of its game progress-syncing Rovio Accounts. So far the service was available globally only on The Croods and had very limited availability on Angry Birds.

As of today Rovio Account is available on Android and iOS globally and can sync your progress of the original Angry Birds as well. Read more »

After being pulled off the App Store due to licensing issues, the capable VLC media player has been completely rewritten and is back on Apple’s mobile platform.

The open-source app is now bi-licensed under Mozilla’s Public License v2 and the GNU Public License v2, which VideoLAN believes won’t have any distribution issues under Apple’s rather stringent licensing regulations. Read more »

Google has released an update for the Chrome browser on iOS, which introduces interoperability with other Google apps installed on your device. Now, you can choose to open links in YouTube, Maps, Google+ and Drive applications. So, for example, you click on a location, you can now open it in the Maps app instead of within the browser.

Other changes include improvements to voice search, fullscreen mode on iPad, access to browser history (which was shockingly absent until now) and a new data saving mode, which compresses pages to reduce bandwidth usage and page load times. Read more »
