Dropbox has launched a minor update for its iOS app, bringing it to version 2.3. While not really substantial, the update brings some improvements as well as bug squashing for the iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch.

You can now share entire folders right from the application, as well as share single or multiple files at once, which is convenient. Read more »

Gameloft’s popular first person shooter has received a massive update that adds several new game modes and maps. The update was released a few days ago on iOS but is now available on Android as well.

Among the changes in the Meltdown Update are three new multiplayer maps: Fracture, Extraction and Backfire. There is also a new Demolition specialization that brings with it seven new perks, such as ability to carry 50% more ammo, increase reload speed, dropping a grenade whenever you die, etc. Read more »

Microsoft has teamed up with Japanese mobile game studio KLab to bring its best-selling title Age of Empires to Android and iOS devices, according to Reuters.

KLab will be responsible for sqeezing the game onto smaller screens and making the real-time strategy thumb-friendly. Read more »

Siri’s pronunciation isn’t always spot on, especially when it comes to names, which ranges from annoying to problematic. With iOS 7, however, Apple has made its digital assistant smarter, allowing you to teach it the current pronunciation without having to type in the phonetic spelling manually.

Siri will ask for help if it has troubles with a name or you can simply tell it it’s wrong – ” That’s not how you pronounce <a name>”. Read more »

In a bid to take down Twitter and Vine, Facebook and Instagram have added a new feature on the popular mobile social network: videos. Now along with being able to upload photos, Instagram will also let you upload short videos from your phone.

After updating to the latest v4.0 of the application on iOS and Android, you will notice that there is a new button in the viewfinder mode. Tapping it brings the video recording interface. This works similar to Vine, where you press and hold the record button to record the video. You can release it as many times you want during the fifteen second span you are allotted and the app stitches the moments into one clip. As with Vine, audio is recorded as well. Read more »

The Skype video messaging service is finally out of beta and is now available to all Skype users. It is available on the desktop in Skype for Windows desktop, Windows 8, OS X and on the mobile for Skype for iPhone, iPad, Android and BlackBerry. The service is currently not available on Windows Phone.

For those who don’t know, Skype video messaging lets you send short video messages over Skype. Unlike your regular video calls, the recipient of these messages need not be online when you send them and can view them whenever they log into Skype. An upcoming mysterious Facebook event has several sources speculating that the social network might be adding video support to its Instagram platform.

Instagram, which was bought by Facebook for a cool $1 billion in cash and stock in April of 2012, has been slowly losing ground on Twitter to Vine, a popular iOS and Android app which lets you share short 6 second video clips. Read more »

The iPad mini is selling well and Apple might be thinking of adopting its narrow bezel design for the big iPad too. Photos of a prototype iPad 5 along with cases for it have leaked, but we only have someone’s lap to give us a sense of scale (otherwise it might just be an iPad mini, take this with a pinch of salt).

The iPad uses a 4:3 screen, which makes it quite wide and the iPad mini got around that with very thin bezels on the left and right of the screen. Read more »

A blurry image of what looks like an upcoming dedicated gamepad for iOS devices has made the rounds on the internet. Despite the far from perfect nature of the photo however, the large white Logitech G-series logo on the controller’s left side leaves little doubt about who its manufacturer is.

Another superhero movie, another movie tie-in game. It’s hardly a surprise then that Warner Bros. have followed the launch of the movie with a game for iOS and Android. Named identical to the movie, Man of Steel is now available on the App Store (separate versions for iPhone and iPad) and the Play Store.

Man of Steel is a third person action game where you engage enemies one at a time. It has the same basic gameplay method that was pioneered by Infinity Blade, where you have to swipe on the screen to attack your enemy and then press buttons on the screen to dodge their attacks. Read more »

Microsoft has released a version of Office Mobile for Office 365 subscribers for the iPhone. Although not quite the full Office suite that everyone was expecting, Office Mobile will let Office 365 users view and edit their Word, Excel and PowerPoint documents stored online right on their iPhone.

With Office Mobile, you can access documents stored on SkyDrive, SkyDrive Pro or SharePoint. You can view as well as edit the documents within the app and it keeps a tab of your recently opened documents. All changes made are instantly saved online but if you don’t have a connection you can continue editing the document and the changes will be uploaded as soon as your iPhone is connected to the internet. For most of us, apps on our smartphones or tablets are means of either entertainment or communication. We have our games, social networking apps and some other stuff that help us get through the day.

There are some people whose lives have genuinely been impacted by these apps. For them, these apps are not just means of entertainment or connectivity but help them learn, grow and function in a way that would otherwise be either impossible or very difficult.
