Tablet shipments will surpass PC shipments in Q4 this year according to IDC

Tablet shipments are set to surpass their PC counterparts in the last quarter of this year according to IDC. PC shipments will still be greater than the tablet ones for the year, though the future belongs to the slate army according to International Data Corporation.

According to IDC, tablet shipments will surpass total PC shipments on annual basis by the end of 2015 (PC shipments include desktop and portables combined). Read more »

Intel unveils its smallest chipset dubbed Quark

After showing its 14nm silicon running laptop, Intel’s CEO Brain Krzanich has officially announced a new chipset series, dubbed as Quark, which is the smallest Intel has built to date.

The Quark chipsets are said to be one-fifth the size of an Atom SoC and the newest addition is built on an open architecture that is designed to be used in integrated systems. Read more »

Intel shows off the working of next generation 14nm SoC

Intel has officially announced its newest SoC, which is the world’s first chipset built on 14nm architecture. At the on-going Intel Developer Forum 2013 event in San Franciso, Intel’s CEO Brain Krzanich showed a functioning laptop that was running on the 14nm Intel SoC.

Seagate announces 500 GB HDD for mobile devices

Seagate has officially taken the wraps off its new Ultra Mobile HDD that is designed exclusively for mobile devices. The hard drive is integrated with Seagate’s Mobile Enablement Kit, which also includes Seagate’s Dynamic Data Drive software technology.

Nokia’s HERE mapping service partners with Mercedes-Benz to help them make self-driving cars

The Nokia-owned HERE mapping service has announced that it’s now partnering with Mercedes-Benz as well as other automotive suppliers to start connecting select cars to the cloud.

The partnership relies on the HERE Connected Driving framework, which allows the cars to compute real time information on demand. The goal is to give the car more information in turn giving it a wider control over different aspects of the driving. Sony has officially announced a new Action Cam model – HDR AS30V. The latest model is said to offer high-performance and a few new features like easy share via Wi-Fi, NFC one-touch remote, GPS, high resolution images and optional wearable live-view remote.

Microsoft is buying Nokia’s Devices & Services division, along with Sales&Marketing for $4.99 billion and will pay an extra $2.17 billion to license Nokia’s patents for 10 years. Yup, I still can’t bend my head over the fact that it’s unlikely we would see a new Nokia smartphone ever. After all, in some regions, the word Nokia is synonymous to a mobile phone.

And $4.99 billion? This certainly sounds like a lot of money, but is it enough?

With big-buck deals such as this one, it’s easier for normal people like us when we put things into perspective. For instance, do you remember how much Microsoft paid for Skype? Sony is working a Chromecast-like TV dongle, FCC confirms

FCC documents, which saw their confidentiality request expire on August 29, reveal Sony is working on a Chromecast-like USB device and bring some of its specs.

Nokia announces HERE Auto smart navigation for cars and Companion app for smartphones

You may or may not know this but Nokia is behind the maps in most in-car navigation systems (4 out of 5 cars, claims the company) and today Nokia is introducing HERE Auto, which brings their mapping and smartphone prowess to the car.

Here Auto is Nokia’s offline navigation solution – turn by turn voice guided navigation for 95 countries (in 2D and 3D, with street level and satellite images). There’s an SDK too, so HERE Auto functionality can be extended with music and social networking apps. Read more »
