Google has expanded the reach of Maps Navigation to 25 new countries across Africa, Europe, Central America and Asia.

Google Maps Navigation, which is still carrying the beta tag, is now available in 99 countries. The coverage in newly added countries is said to include all the major roads covered with turn-by-turn navigation. Read more »

Pantry, Amazon’s online grocery business to debut in 2014

Not content with having flying droids deliver your packages, Amazon has another service that will seemingly inch them closer to world domination: Pantry.

Think of Pantry as an online Costco. Amazon plans to carry about 2,000 of the most commonly purchased groceries and offer them online, at warehouse store discounted prices. Also, like Costco, there is a yearly fee: Amazon Prime. However, if you’re a regular shopper on Amazon, then you probably have a Prime account anyway. Read more »

Indian court allows Nokia to transfer its Chennai plant to Microsoft

Nokia’s plant in India that is located in the city of Chennai was under a dispute with tax authorities in the sub-continent. As a result, the asset, which was one of the biggest Nokia manufacturing plants was sized by the local government. The seizure could prove problematic as some speculated it might prevent the Microsoft acquisition of the Nokia mobile division.

The potential obstacle is now gone, however, as Nokia has won its appeal to lift the seizure of the plant, which allows the company to transfer the unit to Microsoft as a part of its deal. Read more »

Motorola Moto G costs $123 to build

Motorola’s newest offering, the Moto G has been the talk of the town for its impressive hardware specifications and very attractive price tag. Motorola is selling the 16GB version of the smartphone for $199 without a contract in the US, which made many suspect that it makes no profit of the actual hardware. According to an analyst though, it costs only $123 to build so there’s some profit to be extracted there.

Adding the other expenses to get the phone to the market and in turn in your pockets reduces the amount of course, but Mark Newman believes Motorola has an operating profit margin about 5% from the Moto G. Read more »

Game of Thrones and other HBO shows hit Google Play Store in the UK

Google in association with HBO has brought a couple of popular TV shows to the Play Store. The new deal has allowed the search engine giant to include Game of Thrones, Boardwalk Empire, True Blood, Girls and Veep on the Google Play service for the first time.

PlayStation 4 opening weekend sales hit 250K in the UK

Sony’s latest gaming console, the PlayStation 4 saw great reception in the UK. According to a report from The Telegraph, Sony managed to sell 250,000 units of PS4 in about 48 hours after the launch of the PS4 in Britain.

The PS4 sales resulted in revenues of $1.4 billion for Sony, which is far better than what the previous edition of the console had managed. Read more »

Black Friday breaks online sales record thanks to mobiles

The trend of constantly increasing online sales during the Thanksgiving Thursday and the Black Friday has continued for yet another year. A study found that the total revenue for the two days reached $2.99 billion, representing an increase of just over 25% compared to last year.

The boost in sales was driven in large part by the growing mobile sales, which this time accounted for almost a quarter of all online spending. The spending from smartphones and tablets rose a whopping 118% YoY and accounted for 24% of the dollars spend online. Read more »
