Amazon has launched a desktop application for Windows and Mac OS X to accompany its Cloud Drive service.

Unveiled last year, the Cloud Drive service from Amazon was only accessible through a web browser on a desktop computer, but now the desktop app will let you directly access your cloud-stored files. Read more »

Gmail Labs released two new features to the popular mail client – Automatic Message Translation and Smart Mute. It also tweaked the Gmail titles to highlight the number of unread messages.

The most important addition is Auto Translate – it basically incorporates Google’s translate feature into your email, which is something many have demanded for a long time now. Read more »

After being rumored for the better part of the last year, Google officially just announced its own cloud storage solution – Drive.

Google Drive gives you 5GB of storage the second you sign in to use the service. No questions asked. The interface is based on Google Docs and you can collaborate with other people on documents, spreadsheets and presentations. Couple of interesting cloud based storage news from Mountain View. Reuters is reporting that according to its sources, Google Drive service will allow the user to have up to 100GB of storage space. This will of course be a paid extra, with 5GB being made available by default.

Reuters is also saying that the service could be officially launched as soon as Tuesday, that is today. For those who are not aware, Google Drive is said to be Google’s answer to Microsoft’s SkyDrive and Apple’s iCloud service. Users will be able to upload their pictures, videos, documents, etc. all in one place, which will then be synced across different devices. Read more »

Microsoft has just updated its SkyDrive app on iOS and Windows Phone to version 2.0. The application now supports the iPad, including the Retina screen on the latest one, and there are other new tidbits meant to make the life of the users of both platforms a lot easier.

The DoJ has sued Apple along with five major publishers for allegedly fixing prices for ebooks available through iBooks on various Apple devices.

Hachette, HarperCollins, Macmillian, Penguin and Simon & Schuster have all been targeted alongside Apple for entering into pricing agreements over how much to charge for ebooks. Read more »

Google is busy building up its movie catalog for YouTube and Google Play Movies, with Paramount joining in, making for a total of five out six major Hollywood studios (plus 10 independent ones). The catalog has swelled to almost 9,000 titles now.

The deal with Paramount will make 500 new titles available for rent through YouTube or if you’re on an Android device, through Google Play Movies. Read more »

Don’t you just love competition? While Dropbox is still the most popular public cloud storage provider, the heat that it’s feeling from the competition (most notably the upcoming Google Drive) is forcing it to improve its service quite rapidly.

Today, the company announced it’s doubling the referral bonus and upping the maximum allowable free storage limit. From now on you’ll be getting half a gigabyte of extra free space for each of your friends that you manage to convince to start using Dropbox (note that they’ll get half a gig too) and you’ll be able to use those bonuses for obtaining up to 16GB of free storage. One of the most popular alternatives to the Google Play Store, the Amazon Appstore just got an update, bringing its version number to 2.3. Raising the initial download file size cap from 20MB to 50MB, the Amazon Appstore now matches what the original Android app repository has to offer.

Unfortunately, the Amazon store still has no support for secondary downloads – a feature which allows the Play Store to host apps up to 4GB in total size. On the other hand, the update finally solves the issue, where update notifications will pop up even if you have disabled the feature. Read more »
