Today Yahoo has announced it’s published a new version of its app for both iOS and Android to the iTunes App Store and the Google Play Store, respectively. The update is decidedly bigger for Android, where it introduces animated weather conditions (such as fog, rain, heat, snow, lightning, and frost).

Most of those have been available on iOS 8 since September, but today lightning and frost have made their way to devices running Apple’s mobile operating system as well. Read more »

The PS4 Remote Play app allows owners PlayStation 4 and Xperia devices to use the portable device as a wireless screen for their gaming console. That neat trick is reserved for certain Sony Androids, though with a little help from XDA Developers you can now lift that restriction.

The ported app requires Android 4.4 KitKat or later (Lollipop is a bit more difficult to set up), a PlayStation 4 (obviously), while a 5GHz router is recommended. Read more »

Facebook added auto-enhancement of photos to its already rich set of tools for sharing your life’s moments with the world. The feature is available only for iOS devices for the time being – it will arrive on Android at a later stage.

Pushbullet has been pretty great even before today’s update, letting you see your Android notifications on your PC, Mac, or Chrome OS device. But it’s now added what has to have been one of the most requested features – the ability to quickly act on those notifications.

Sure, you’ve been able to dismiss a notification from your computer – and it would disappear from your Android device. Now though, on your computer, you can see and use those ‘quick actions’ that show up underneath Android notifications on your phone or tablet. Read more »

Today is a big day for fans of Instagram, as it has received its first new filters in two years. The app now boasts five additional filters you can choose from, and it’s also gotten a couple of usability improvements as well.

The new functions are to be found inside Instagram version 6.4.0 for iOS, and version 6.12.0 for Android. These are already out in the iTunes App Store and the Google Play Store. Read more »

Skype announced a new promotion today for its users in India. For a limited time up until March 1, 2015 (00:01 IST) all new and current Skype users in the fast-growing India market will be able to benefit from the offer. Interestingly enough calls can be both personal and business, but certain limitations do apply to prevent abuse of the service.

Google Drive’s office suite for Android is getting a minor but helpful update that landed on iOS last week. Docs, Sheets and Slides are all getting improvements.

The biggest update is that the apps can now open and edit Microsoft Office files. File creation and updating has also been improved. Read more »

BBM for Windows Phone has been updated to version 2.0 today, and there is a lot of new functionality inside. The Timed Messages and Message Retraction features that made their debut on the other mobile platforms back in October have finally landed on Windows Phone on this occasion.

The app also got the BBM Shop with stickers, which are the new cool and trendy thing for messaging apps as you may know. Read more »

Skype’s wonderful Translator functionality has finally become reality. The feature was first demoed by Microsoft back in May, and now it’s available as a preview on Windows 8.1 and Windows 10.

At the moment, it only works between English and Spanish speakers. But it does do on-the-fly translation of voice calls. So you speak in one of these two languages, and the person at the other end of the ‘line’ will hear the other one. There is a slight delay, of course, but it’s perhaps smaller than one might have expected. Read more »

Aside from the Glance Screen update we just reported on, Microsoft has something else for Windows Phone fans today. It is, in fact, a new app, currently in Beta. It’s called Gestures, and it automates some tasks based on how you hold or move your phone.

It lets you control some of your phone’s functions without needing to touch the display. The first release, the one which is now available to download from the Windows Phone store, focuses on calls. Read more »

The Glance Screen functionality for Windows Phones lets you see some information while your phone is in standby. The time, weather, alarms, calendar events all show up there along with info about missed calls and received messages. And today, the Glance Screen app itself has seen an update.

Popular IM and voice call app Viber is expanding into games, following in the footsteps of its neighbors Line, WeChat and Kakao. Right now it’s a limited release with only three games and four countries, but will go in January, barring any show-stopping issues.

It’s been a busy year for Viber – it went after Skype with global landline and cellphone calls in December 2013, then it was acquired by Rakuten, launched a desktop app and even took a swing at Twitter with public chats. Read more »

The recent leak of a Windows 10 consumer build (9901) has provided tech-enthusiast and Windows fans alike with information on a lot of previously unannounced features of the upcoming OS release. And while Xbox and Cortana integration are obviously on their way we are yet to see one of the exciting features boasted by Microsoft – ability to run Windows Phone applications on a desktop Windows distribution.

The leaked Windows 10 build in question has given us a possible glimpse of precisely this feature. An interesting picture popped up on twitter, showing HTC’s “Make More Space” app listed in the Windows 10 Store. The application is clearly intended for Windows phone, as evident from its listing. One of the fun (or horribly annoying, depending upon how you see it) things about the live streaming videos on YouTube is you can post in the chat with everybody else watching the video, and the chat appears on the side and updates live as people post messages.

This functionality has been missing from the mobile apps but with YouTube 6.0 Google is bringing it to the Android app. Now when you open a live streaming video, you will find the button to live chat at the bottom, which will show you the messages from others and let you type your own. Read more »

The popular Office Suite 8 for Android OS has just got a massive 8.1 update, which brings a complete UI overhaul with desktop-inspired looks and many new functionality to the Word, Excel, PowerPoint and PDF modules.
