For most of us, apps on our smartphones or tablets are means of either entertainment or communication. We have our games, social networking apps and some other stuff that help us get through the day.

There are some people whose lives have genuinely been impacted by these apps. For them, these apps are not just means of entertainment or connectivity but help them learn, grow and function in a way that would otherwise be either impossible or very difficult. Rovio released a teaser for the latest installment of the Angry Birds saga. Dubbed Angry Birds Go, the upcoming title promises to be the “most thrilling and action-packed” installment of the franchise yet.

Intel has been gunning after ARM in the mobile space for a while now and the chip giant may have an ace up its sleeve – a Y-series Haswell processor with SDP of only 4.5W. This should be low-enough to go into relatively small and light tablets as it’s close to the power draw of ARM chipsets.

The chip features a dual-core processor that comes in two versions – 6.5W SDP and 4.5W SDP, both having the same TDP, 11.5W. In case you’ve missed the new terminology, TDP is the maximum power draw (CPU and GPU at full throttle), while SDP is a target for “regular” usage. Read more »

Google Glass is available only to a select few and one of them agreed to sacrifice the $1,500 smart glasses in the name of science. By which I mean “people who want to see gadgets disassembled.”

Glass was apparently not meant to be torn down but the Catwig team that did the disassembly managed to put it back together in fully operational condition and with only minor cosmetic damage. Read more »

Core CyanogenMod developer Steve Kondik has used his Google Plus page to tease an upcoming privacy feature that the project may soon adopt.

“Run in Incognito Mode” as it is called will allow you to choose which apps have access to your personal data. The feature works on a per-app basis and if enabled returns an empty list of contacts, calendar entries, browser history and messages for the selected app. GPS will appear to be off as well. Windows Phone pioneered the flat UI on mobile and the new iOS 7 look shares a lot of similarities – at least whoever maintains the Nokia Hong Kong’s Weibo account thinks so. They created this image and challenged users to pick which side is WP8 and which side is iOS 7.

This Monday Apple announced the new MacBook Air and two short days later it has already been torn down by the iFixit team. What they found was that the new 13″ model is almost identical to the old one. even the model number was the same, which might make things confusing and the only external difference is the new microphone grill. Apple has added a second microphone on the new Air.

Things on the inside looked pretty similar, but with newer components obviously. The big bump in battery life comes from Mac OS X Mavericks enhancements, Intel’s new Haswell CPU and a slightly bigger battery – 7.6V and 7,150mAh (up from 7.3V, 6,700mAh). Read more »

If you think all the gaming action this month is happening only on the consoles, think again. Gameloft has announced the next versions of their popular Asphalt and Brothers in Arms games and the visuals are likely to blow your mind.

The first is Asphalt 8: Airborne, the successor to the rather excellent Asphalt 7: Heat. From the trailer it seems there is not a whole lot of difference in terms of gameplay but holy mother of polygons does it look spectacular, especially for a mobile game. Read more »

Apple released the first iOS 7 beta yesterday and we just couldn’t keep our hands off it. We just couldn’t wait until the fall to give the latest version of the Apple platform a try. We’ve installed the new iOS on an iPhone 5 and we’ve restored it from an iCloud backup. Everything has gone smooth so we are now able to share our first impressions with you.

AMD just claimed the title “First-Ever 5 GHz Processor” with its new FX-9590 based on the Piledriver architecture. That’s the official max frequency, not the work of an overclock-happy enthusiast. But the keyword is “max” – this is how fast the 9590 goes with Turbo Core 3.0 topped out and some of the cores powered off.

The FX-9590 packs an octa-core processor (four modules of two cores) and promises “new levels of gaming and multimedia performance” for the desktop. Read more »
