While Canon’s 5D Mark II is easily among the benchmarks in DSLR photography, one must agree that the highly revered camera is of a rather considerable age by now. After all, it was announced back in 2008.

It appears however, that its replacement might be hitting the market in the nearest future. An unknown Canon DSLR shooter has been spotted on a safari in Kenya, in the hands of a gentleman who confirmed himself to be a Canon employee, testing 200-400mm and 600mm prototype lenses. Judging by its looks, the mysterious camera is quite likely to be the upcoming Canon 5D Mark III.

The BlackBerry PlayBook caught a lot of flack when it launched because it lacked apps that seemed central to the functions of a business tablet – contacts, email and calendar. RIM has been working on adding these features in PlayBook OS 2.0, which rumor has it is finally launching on February 17.

You’ve probably heard that there’s an Apple event scheduled for January 19, this Thursday. The invite they sent out promises “an education announcement” and the rumor mill says that Apple will be unveiling new tools and a platform to create and publish eBooks, with a strong focus on interactive content.

According to Steve Jobs’ biography, digital book publishing and its use in education was a pet project of Apple’s former leader and in a couple of days we might see the results. To quote the biography, textbook publishing is a “$8 billion a year industry ripe for digital destruction.” Read more »

With a loyal following numbering north of a million users, there is no doubt that CyanogenMod is among the premier aftermarket Android ROMs out there. One of the latest ideas regarding the future of the project is likely to make it even more attractive as it involves a proprietary store for root apps.

According to the CyanogeMod team member Koush, a proprietary app store would enable the CM team to take a small cut from developers who showcase their apps there, which will be used for paying for server and hardware maintenance. Read more »

The announcement of the Apple iPad 3 is just a few months away now, so naturally the rumor train is starting to pick up speed. In today’s scoop we are talking display, camera and the fate of the current iPad after the release of its successor.

Once again, we are hearing that the iPad 3 will have four times the resolution of the iPad 2, which will reportedly be marketed as Retina display. Quadrupling the iPad 2 resolution on the same screen estate will give you pixel density of 264 ppi, which on a screen this big should feel as good as the 326ppi of the last two iPhones. Read more »

Hackers and modders have already figured out ways around Apple’s encrypted servers to bring the iPhone 4S‘s previously exclusive voice assistant Siri to Apple’s older i-devices.

Now however it looks like Apple might have undergone a change of heart, or at least allowed a lapse in security. There are still no official plans from Apple to bring Siri to the iPhone 4, but there are clues in iOS 5.0.1 that could give 4 users some Siri goodness via other means. Read more »

Ivy Bridge seems to be moving away from us every time we get closer – Intel has reportedly told its partners that their next generation desktop CPUs won’t be hitting the market in March-April as previously thought, but instead will come out some time in Q2 2012.

If you’ve been keeping a close eye on Twitter for the past few days you’d know that a trio of hackers claimed to have come up with a tool that lets you get root access on the BlackBerry PlayBook. Now they have a video to back up those claims.

Carrying the wildly inappropriate name Dingleberry, the tool is said to be compatible with both v1.x and v2.x of the PlayBook OS. Either RIM didn’t close the exploit that the hackers use in the upcoming release of the platform or it’s a hardware exploit. Read more »

Apple has just released the first beta version of the latest edition of their iOS mobile platform to all registered developers. Available for the iPhone 4S, 4 and 3GS, the iPad and iPad 2 as well as the third and fourth-generation iPod touch devices, this is hardly the most major of updates.

iOS 5.1 focuses mostly on giving developers more APIs to work with and bugfixes. What might be more interesting to you than the update itself is the code of the new iOS release, which references three new iDevices. Read more »
