A lot of people were asking how the new Nokia Lumia 1020 stacks up against a DSLR. Unfortunately, the software on the 1020 isn’t fully complete yet so Nokia doesn’t allow samples to be published, so it’s early for a proper comparison. The Nokia Lumia 1020 is a lot of camera for a smartphone and Nokia likes to remind of that. It its latest piece the Nokia Conversations Blog has detailed 10 reasons why the Lumia 1020 is the most exciting name of the season.
The first seven reasons revolve around the brilliant 41 MP PureView sensor and its software. They detail the Pro Camera suite that captures photos “like a pro”, the next-generation optical image stabilization, the versatile shutter speed, which is great for quick shots and bulb photography with long exposure. Built by Lehmann Aviation the LA300 is a drone, to which the Lumia 1020 attaches, that can fly as high as 15 kilometers (that’s about 9.3 miles for you Imperial users), for as long as 30 minutes, at speeds of 20-80 km/h (12/49 MPH) and will withstand temperatures between -25 °C up to +60 °C (-13 °F to 140 °F). Nokia has updated its Cinemagraph camera lens app, which lets you create animated GIF right from your WP8 smartphone. The latest version of the Nokia Cinemagraph comes with support for higher-resolution 1280 x 720 pixel GIFs, which is a notable improvement over the 800 x 448 pixel animated images the app produced before .
The update also brings a crossfading transitions and a color pop feature that makes it easier to restore original colors of your images. Read more »
The first camera samples from the newly announced Nokia Lumia 1020 are in. Nokia published a plethora of photos in both full resolution and the 5MP oversampled mode a.k.a. PureView mode.
Nokia Lumia 1020 features a 41MP camera sensor which is capable of taking 7152 x 5368 pixels pictures in 4:3 mode (that’s 38MP effective resolution) and 7728 x 4354 in 16:9 aspect (34MP). As with the Nokia 808 PureView, those huge photos can be oversampled to 5MP, producing shots with excellent per-pixel quality. Alternatively, you can use the extra resolution for loseless zoom – you’ll be giving up on the oversampled super pixels, but you’ll be getting real 5MP resolution while zooming – something beyond the powers of any other smartphone. During the launch event of the Lumia 1020 smartphone, Nokia has revealed that some major third-party applications will soon be joining the Windows Phone Store.
Among the most prominent names to be joining the Microsoft ecosystem are Flipboard, Vine and Path. They have all made quite a stir on the other platforms they are available so their arrival to WP8 is certainly great news for the Modern UI loving geeks. Read more »

The battery pack for the Nokia Lumia 1020 (codenamed EOS) has leaked again, this time with more photos that offer a much better look at the accessory. By the looks of it, the battery pack won’t add a lot of thickness – the 1,020mAh battery seems to be contained in the grip.

Kirik SD File Viewer, the first file viewer for the Windows Phone is now available in the Windows Phone Store. The app lets you open and view files and folders on your memory card.
Kirik SD File Viewer will show a heap of file formats, which includes pdf, epb, mkv, flv, vob, zip,rar and other such known formats directly. However, the viewer would require a supporting app to open your files. Read more »
If you’re of the small demographic who own Windows Phone 8 devices devices not made by Nokia (which is now under 20% of WP users), you’d be glad to hear that Nokia is making its HERE Drive+ navigation service available to all WP8 smartphone.
Until now, HERE Drive+ and its global, offline turn-by-turn navigation was exclusive to high-end Lumias, and one of the key advantages to owning a Lumia over other WP8 devices. Read more »

The Nokia Lumia 1020 / 909 / EOS (there are competing reports of what it will actually be the final name) will launch on July 11 and go on sale as soon as August (or even this month) and now we’re even starting to see accessory leaks.
The first to leak is a battery pack that adds another 1,020mAh of juice, an extra 35% according to Izestia.ru. That would put the Lumia 1020 battery at around 2,900mAh as well as provide a very comfortable grip that will improve the EOS handling as a camera. Read more »
