Apple is celebrating 30 years since the creation of the Mac lineup of computers. Before Apple was synonymous with the iPod, iPad and iPhone Macs were the reason the company survived. Well that and Steve Jobs’ relentlessness.

For the past year, the Chinese government along with the Institute of Software at the Chinese Academy of Sciences have been developing its own mobile operating system to rival Android .

Today the fruits of their labor have been revealed, as an HTC Butterfly S has emerged running China Operating System (COS) – a closed-source mobile OS based on Ubuntu that looks eerily like Android Jelly Bean skinned with HTC’s Sense 5 overlay. Read more »

Viber has released a new update for the Android version of the app. v4.2 brings with it some useful new features, most importantly call blocking. You can now specify any number or contact you don’t wish to receive calls from and it will be blocked for you.

Other changes include ability to send up to 10 images at the same time, ability to customize your messages and call sounds, new media gallery within conversations and other improvements and bug fixes. Read more »

It seems popular keyboard maker for Android SwiftKey is working on an iOS version. But because of the way iOS works, you can’t have a universal custom keyboard outside of a particular app so now it seems we are getting SwiftKey Note.

SwiftKey Note seems like a note taking app along the lines of the Fleksy keyboard app. Basically, this app will let you type whatever you want using the custom SwiftKey keyboard and all the features its known for and then you can copy paste the text in any other app. This is an extremely roundabout way of doing things, which probably explains why keyboard apps haven’t taken off on iOS but it seems SwiftKey is trying to make do with what they have. Sony recently announced a camera case for the Xperia Z Ultra that allows you to attach the Sony QX10 or QX100 cameras on the rather large body of the Z Ultra. Now Sony has announced a similar case for the new Xperia Z1 Compact, although the reason this time is not so clear.

As with the Z Ultra case, the case for the Z1 Compact (SPA-ACX4) snaps on to the back and has a provision where you can attach either of the two camera accessories without their snapping attachment. Read more »

We met the Sony Xperia Z1 Compact at CES, but now we’ve lured it into our office and right in front of the camera. This handset promises to revitalize the small, but premium phone market, going against the grain of the phablets and near-phablet handsets that have become the norm forAndroid flagships at the moment.

With a beautiful glass on aluminum frame design and compact dimensions, the Z1 Compact might be able to poach a few dedicated iPhone users. The waterproof rating and 20.7MP camera can’t hurt either. Read more »

Amid the worst slump in the history of PCs, IBM has come to terms to sell its low-end server business to Chinese manufacturer Lenovo.

The deal will be the largest in Lenovo’s history, amounting to about $2 billion in cash, with the rest coming as Lenovo stock. Read more »

Google and BBC have teamed up for a little reasonably-priced car challenge at Top Gear’s track – the Dunsfold Aerodrome. The project involved the most popular tame racing driver, the Stig, and the Street View Opel (that’s Continental Europe for Vauxhall) Astra.

Aside from the standard Street View walkthrough of the famous track there’s also a video of the Street View car and a rampant Mercedes SLS AMG driven by the Stig going alongside it. Read more »

The popular ghost-messaging service has come under fire recently after 4.6 million Snapchat users’ data was disseminated online due to a security vulnerability in Snapchat’s software. Read more »

Rockstar Games is irritatingly quiet on the subject of a PC version of its Grand Theft Auto V game, but as an Amazon listing indicates, the wait of PC enthusiasts may soon be over.

Amazon Germany has posted a listing for the game, which hints that an official announcement may soon be upon us. Released in September last year for the PS3 and Xbox 360, the game has become a major hit with more than 11.21 million copies. Read more »

eBay had a good final quarter in 2013 to round off a great year – revenue grew 19% both for Q4 and for the whole year, reaching $6.6 billion. Both eBay and PayPal reached record results from mobile, which was one of the major drivers of growth.

For the fourth quarter of last year net income was $850 million with an operating margin of 22.6%, up 0.7 percentage points compared to Q4 the year before. Read more »

Disney has made Where’s My Mickey? free on iOS for a limited time. The game has been free on Windows Phone along with a few other Disney games for a while now but this is the first time it has gone free on iOS.

Where’s My Mickey? is quite similar to Where’s My Water? and Where’s My Perry? but features Disney’s iconic character Mickey Mouse instead. There are also some amusing short animation clips between levels that set this game apart from the other two. We reviewed this game back when it was released and found it to be quite entertaining.
