Samsung has announced three new members of the Series 7 and Series 5 range of All-in-One (AIO) desktop computers running Windows 8. The Series 7 includes a 27-inch and a 23-inch model whereas the Series 5 includes a 21-inch model.

All three models come with a 10-point multi-touch display that supports the full range of gestures you find in Windows 8. They also all have a resolution of 1920 x 1080. Read more »

The Internationale Funkausstellung Berlin or IFA will commence by the end of this week and naturally a bevy of manufacturers will be displaying their latest and greatest this year at Berlin. With the event this close, you are bound to see some leaks and teasers and Samsung has just provided one of the latter.

Microsoft is gearing up to launch Windows 8, a version that marks a significant departure from previous incarnations in that it supports ARM processors. The Redmond-based company is quite excited about what it has achieved with Windows 8 RT (that’s what the ARM version is called) and the kind of hardware it and its OEM partners have designed.

One of the biggest advantages of ARM over Intel or AMD made x86 processors is energy efficiency. Windows 8 RT was designed to reduce power usage to capitalize on that, but also allow for smaller batteries, which in turn means thinner and lighter gadgets. Read more »

The term “Metro”, describing Microsoft’s new user interface design gained popularity starting with Windows Phone 7 after its Zune HD beginnings. It really grew into prominence when it became the UI style for Windows 8 and now, not long before its scheduled late October launch date, Microsoft renamed it.

A leaked memo was the first sign that the name “Metro” is on the way out, supposedly due to copyright concerns. “Windows 8 style interface” was suggested as a replacement, but Microsoft may have settled on a simpler name. Read more »

It has been known for a while now that Microsoft will be shipping a version of the new Office 2013 with Windows RT and that it will be the only non-Metro application that can be accessed on this particular version of the operating system.

Now we are learning that Office 2013 RT, which is to be included on Windows RT will be a watered-down version of the full blown Office 2013 that you will experience on standard Windows 8 or 7. Read more »

Acer’s CEO JT Wang has some words of wisdom for Microsoft and they involve telling them not to enter the tablet market, which is exactly what Microsoft plans to do with the Surface.

Just yesterday Microsoft announced Windows 8 is finally ready and released to manufacturing. Today its Enterprise N version is all over the torrent servers.

The N version stands for a stripped down version, which lacks the Windows Media Player – a requirement ruled by the European Commission 8 years ago. Read more »

Metro has been Microsoft’s code name for the user interface that they debuted with the Zune HD back in 2009 and has been a major part of their UI design language in Windows Phone as well as the upcoming Windows 8 desktop operating system.

Well, the UI isn’t going anywhere but the name is. Microsoft has stopped using the Metro name for the UI effective immediately and has also asked the developers to stop using it in their apps. Google has released the latest version of the desktop Chrome browser, which brings it to version 21.0.1180.60. One of the two important features is the support for the Retina display on the new MacBook Pro. This feature was so far available on the beta version but now those who use the stable release can take advantage of it as well.

Another feature that was only available on the beta version before is support for a camera and microphone. Now thanks to addition of the getUserMedia API, websites will finally have access to your webcam (if you allow them), which will let you use services like Webcam Toy, Magic Xylophone and Sketchbots, to name a few. Windows 8 is coming in the end of October and to ensure its adoption goes as smooth as possible, Microsoft has announced the new Wedge Mobile Keyboard and Wedge Touch Mouse.

The Wedge Mobile Keyboard keyboard is meant for tablets so it isn’t some simple Bluetooth keyboard with Windows 8-specific keys. No, it comes with a special cover which hides some nifty tricks under its sleeve. Read more »

Microsoft has revealed in its annual report filed this week that the anticipated Windows 8 based Surface tablet will be released along with the operating system on October 26.
