The Linux-based Tizen platform is yet to see the light of day on a retail handset but it goes without saying that the OS is being tested internally by Samsung. As such, we are not completely surprised to see the name pop-up in benchmark results, which in this case happens to be the browser based HTML5 test.

What’s interesting, however, is that the Tizen browser not only showed up in the benchmark, it also managed to top it within its category (Mobile Phones) while running on an unknown device. Founders of insanely popular social photo-sharing iOS app, Instagram made no bones about it at SXSW this year stating that an Android version was on its way and it will be “better than our iPhone app“, in fact they went as far as to say “it’s one of the most amazing Android apps you’ll ever see.”

The BBC’s popular VOD service iPlayer, which brings you popular TV and Radio programs from their site as well as on various mobile devices and and web-enabled TV’s, is now also available on the Xbox 360.

If you like running custom ROMs on your Galaxy S II or even better creating those yourself, you’d be glad to know that Samsung just released the source code for its ICS kernel of its yet-to-be-replaced flagship.

The code of the updated kernel that started seeding last week (that we also reviewed in detail) is now available to download from the Samsung servers. This will enable the indie dev community to create more elaborate mods, using the official Samsung drivers and even pieces of the code when need occurs. Read more »

Google has released another update to the recently updated Google Play Store app on Android, which takes the version number to 3.5.15. Among the list of changes is the ability to sort user reviews and view all your previously downloaded apps, both of which were available on the Play Store website for a while now.

The review sorting feature lets you sort user reviews for an app by the most helpful first or newest first. You can now also choose to view reviews for the latest version of the app and also reviews for just the handset that you use. This will be incredibly useful in separating all the useless reviews from the ones that actually matter to you and your device. Read more »

Up until now, CyanogenMod ROMs were released with root access available by default. But this had become a cause for concern over time; making root access available meant giving apps complete access to your device and thus putting yourself at a security risk.

So in order to take care of this situation, the CyanogenMod team has decided to disable root access over USB from CyanogenMod 9 onwards. Read more »

Maemo and MeeGo have an awesome community around them with strong DIY attitude. It’s thanks to that community that the Nokia N9 and the N900 are getting WhatsApp, even though the company behind it hasn’t made an official app for the platform.

The Nokia Lumia 800 has one of the most solid cameras in the Windows Phone realm (or at least until the HTC Titan II comes out). However, this doesn’t mean Nokia is done improving it or has already moved on – in fact, the company just confirmed that there’s a cool new feature coming up for it.

The news came from the personal Twitter account of Damian Dinning – the head of the Nokia camera division. Apparently, the native panorama app is already on its way and we can probably count on it coming with the next software update. Read more »

The highly anticipated iOS version of the popular Mac email client Sparrow has finally arrived. Sparrow is now available for download on the App Store and costs $2.99.

The reason everyone was waiting for this app is because anyone who has used the built-in Mail app on iOS can tell you that it is quite mediocre. Although Apple has spruced it up a few times over the years it still lags far behind the official Gmail app on Android or the email app in Windows Phone. Read more »

Tizen – what became of MeeGo after Samsung took Nokia’s place in the project and also Bada’s replacement – kept a very low profile at the MWC, but it was there. A short video demo of the gallery shows that the new OS delivers a lot of eye candy even in this early stage of its development.

Earlier this year we saw some Tizen screenshots, but the traditional grid of thumbnails has given way to a less useful, but definitely prettier 3D arrangement. Read more »
