Viber, the free application that allows you to make voice calls and send text messages to other users free of charge via 3G or Wi-Fi, has hit the 50 million user milestone.

Viber users put out some 150 million calls and almost a billion text messages per month, giving other competing services like Skype and Vonage a run for their money. Read more »

First introduced as a beta several months ago, Nokia Public Transport has made its way into a commercial release. As its name suggests, the Nokia Belle app is ready to help you navigate your way around the transportation systems of about 80 cities and urban areas.

If you thought the OS on the PlayStation Vita would be limited to that device, think again. It seems Sony is looking into porting the Vita OS onto smartphones and tablets. This OS has apparently been designed by Sony to be expandable and can be used for powering smartphones and tablets. They may not be in a hurry to port it over on to other platforms right now but it is certainly something they could do down the line.

The highly popular Instagram app was recently updated and brought a handful of new features and changes. First of all is the new Lux effect, which brings out more detail in your images. It works a bit similar to the HDR function built-into the iPhone’s camera and brings out the details in the dark as well as light areas of the picture. This effect can then also be accompanied by a filter.

Other changes include the addition of a new filter called ‘Sierra’ and a redesigned interface that uses an updated header and menu buttons for a simpler and more refined look. While demonstrating Windows on ARM (WOA), Microsoft also showcased the next version of its office suite, Office 15. This new version of Office will be fully compatible with WOA and come with Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote.

Recently published operator profiles by Apple refer to iOS 5.1 and a release date of March 9, 2012. The profiles are intended for various operators in Japan, France, Finland, Greece and Sweden and will make sure the iPhones will connect to the specific network after an update.

Google is close to launching its very own Cloud Storage service, at least according to the Wall Street Journal. The file-storing service in question would be in direct rivalry against Dropbox, one of the hottest cloud-storage providers out there.

The main purpose of Google’s cloud service, called “Drive”, will be to meet users needs for storing files when using mobile devices like smartphone, tablets and laptops and to eliminate the need to manually sync them across desktops and vice versa, according to people, who are close to the development of Drive. Microsoft has announced that they will be launching the beta version of Windows 8, called the Consumer Preview on Wednesday, February 29 at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. The fact that Windows 8 has been designed from the grounds up for tablets suggests why Microsoft would want to announce its next operating system at a mobile event.

Limited availability aside, the Chrome beta launch went as smooth as Google could have possibly hoped. Everyone who got a chance to take the new Android browser for a spin loved it and for a good reason. The Chrome beta is smooth, offers a cool UI and plenty of eye-candy and seemed to have the stock browser in its pocket.

And then you notice that it’s lacking Flash support. But hey, the stock ICS browser also missed Flash at launch and got it later, right? As it turns out, Chrome for Android won’t be as lucky and it will most likely remain without Flash support forever. Read more »
