Polar explorer Eric Larsen is attempting to break the Arctic expedition speed record by covering the 500 mile distance from the Northern Ellesmere Island to the North Pole in less than 49 days.

LG released a rather bizarre ad for its curved G Flex phablet. The head-scratching video clip aims to accentuate the natural curve of the device, as well as its self-healing capability.

The ad goes to great lengths to convince the viewer that the device is “the most human phone”. Read more »

We already know that the Nvidia Tegra K1 GPU is crazy fast and today a batch of benchmarks prooves that the chipset’s 64-bit CPU is also no slouch.

More specifically, the dual-core version of the Tegra K1 chip has appeared in the AnTuTu database scoring more than Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 805 chipset, which packs four Krait 450 cores. In fact, it scored almost 10,000 points more than the Snapdragon 800. Read more »

At a Morgan Stanley conference when asked by analyst James Fawcett about the puts and takes of sapphire versus glass Senior Vice President at Corning (the company that makes Gorilla Glass) Tony Tripeny has a lengthy response.

The question came in regards to “one large handset and device maker” looking into sapphire for its devices. That maker is Apple and as we know the company is heavily investing into sapphire and will probably use the material for the displays of its upcoming smartphones and, possibly, smartwatch. OnePlus, the company behind an upcoming super-smartphone that’s set to run exclusively on the popular CyanogenMod Android ROM, is set to go official on March 9.

Fittingly, the device has been tipped to feature a Snapdragon 800 processor, and some other hardware details have been leaked out of China. Read more »

Few months ago, we saw reports of Samsung running special code on its phones, viz. the Galaxy S4 and the Galaxy Note 3, that detected when you ran certain benchmark software on the device and would then run them at full processor clock speed. This was considered cheating as the phone, under normal circumstances, would never run at those speeds in other apps and thus the benchmarking scores were not representative of the actual device performance.

After much ado was made about this situation, it seems Samsung has finally decided to backtrack on its stance on messing around with benchmark scores. According to a new report by Ars Technica, Samsung has removed its code responsible for maxing out hardware on benchmarking apps. This was also confirmed by an independent developer on Twitter. Samsung is a wiz at making great videos and commercials and the company is certainly going to spare no effort in promoting its latest flagship. The Koreans have uploaded yet another promo video for the Galaxy S5 flagship.

The video is almost 4 minutes long and goes through everything Samsung thinks you need to know about the gadget. From the new body materials and colors to the new camera with a larger 1/2.6″ sensor (compared to the 1/3.06″ of old), the phase-detection auto-focus that’s supposed to be the quickest on any smartphone, the IP67 dust and water protection, the fitness and wellness apps and sensors, the fingerprint scanner, the lot. It has been established multiple times that the HTC HD2 is an almighty smartphone with an incredibly dedicated user base with great technical skills. The handset has received ports of just about every OS under the sun – from Android to Jolla. The latest conquest of the HD2 devs is the Nokia X ROM, which is currently in the works.

The Nokia X Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean port is currently not very stable. In fact, it’s only capable of booting up on the HTC HD2 with only the boot sound managing to go through. Important services including Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, storage, Android’s Media Server service aren’t running yet. Read more »

Samsung has released two new commercials for the new Galaxy S5 smartphone and the Gear 2 smartwatch, respectively. Both commercials were also shown during yesterday’s 86th Academy Awards ceremony, which Samsung was an official sponsor of.

Both ads are quite simple and done quite well. They feature simple shots of the products with a few line of text using double entendre, talking about the devices and the ceremony during which they were telecast at the same time. Read more »

Just when we had stopped cringing at the first teaser video for the second generation HTC One, to be announced on March 25, HTC has gone ahead and released a second one.

Just like the first one, which concentrated on the BoomSound speakers, the new video focuses on another important feature of the new One, the anodized aluminum unibody. The new HTC One seems to use the same process that they used for the current HTC One, which is no bad thing as the design and build of the current HTC One is excellent. Read more »
