Apple has released the second major update to OS X Mavericks since it was released last year. The 10.9.2 update brings with it some useful new changes, along with a major security fix.

One of the changes in this update is a fix for the SSL/TLS bug that allowed an attacker to access sensitive information on machines on a network. This bug was also present in iOS, which was patched in iOS 7.0.6 and has now been patched in OS X as well. Read more »

Recently, Microsoft announced it will cease support for Microsoft Windows XP, leaving the 13-year-old OS without future updates or optimizations after the April 8 deadline.

The latest data from Net Applications shows that adoption of Windows XP is actually rising in light of this news, with the percentage of Windows XP users going up to 29.23% in January. Read more »

It seems Apple’s desktop operating system gets a lot of attention from Android developers these days. Just after the JOdin 3 flash tool got its Mac OS release, Cyanogen has also made its CyanogenMod Installer available for the Apple desktop OS.

CM Installer, as its often referred to, allows for easy flashing of the CyanogenMod ROM on Android phones and tablets, without having to do a lot of tiresome hacking. There is a bunch of devices that the CM Installer works well with – they’re mainly from the Nexus family as well as most Samsung Galaxy S and Note members. The HTC One is also supported. Read more »

Google has released a new version of Chrome (32.0.1700.76) for Windows, OS X and Linux that brings with it some useful new features, such as showing activity of multimedia status on tabs, supervised users and special mode for Windows 8.1.

We often have dozens of tabs open on your browser and then one of them starts playing a sound and we have no idea which one is responsible for it. With the latest update, Chrome will now show a speaker icon on any tab that is currently playing a sound, so you know where to go to mute that annoying sound. It will also show a red dot if a tab is using your webcam and a blue rectangle if a tab is casting to your TV connected to a Chromecast. Read more »

The newest Mac Pro complies with all EU laws and is available for sale in Europe.

In March of 2013, the older Mac Pro had been banned for sale in Europe due to regulation changes.

EU law stipulated that in order for an electronic device to be deemed safe, fan guards were required to cover the exposed fans of the previous Mac Pro model. The electrical ports on the popular desktop computer also required slight changes. Read more »

The free Windows 8.1 update was released on October 18 and since then adoption has been growing steadily. Yet the number people who went through with the update is still less than half of Windows 8 users. Windows 7 continued to grow too and, surprisingly, so do Vista numbers.

The info comes from Net Applications and points to a combined Windows 8.x market share of 10.49% in December, breaking the 10% mark for the first time since the new generation OS was introduced. Read more »

The 2013 Mac Pro is a beautiful piece of tech and when it was announced we were quite pessimistic about its prospects of down-the-road upgrades and how repairable it would be. Thankfully, the iFixit team has proven them wrong by giving the Mac Pro its usual teardown treatment.

In its teardown iFixit has found out that the Mac Pro isn’t too hard to disassemble and once you do, you can easily replace the RAM and fill the four slots with SDRAM of your choosing. Read more »

Apple recently made its iWork suite of applications, including Pages, Numbers and Keynote, along with the iLife suite of apps including iPhoto, iMovie and Garageband free for buyers of new Macs. Call it a bug or a feature, but if the Mac App Store detects an older version of Pages, Numbers, Keynote, iPhoto, iMovie, Garageband or even the $79.99 photo editing application Aperture, it will tell you that an update is available for download in the Mac App Store, regardless of where you sourced the app from. Apple has just announced its refreshed 13″ and 15″ MacBook Pro notebooks, which now flaunt Intel Haswell CPUs as well as Retina displays. On top of that, they’ve been put on a diet and are now lighter and slimmer.
