AMD’s $549 Radeon HD 7970 launched, gets benchmarked

The highly anticipated AMD 7xxx-series GPU are finally arriving and the first one out of the gate is the Radeon HD 7970. This is the first GPU to utilize the 28nm process technology and according to AMD is the fastest single-GPU graphics card in the market today.

The 7970 is clocked at 925MHz and can be overclocked to 1.1GHz. It has 2,048 stream processors and 3GB of GDDR5 memory with 384-bit memory bus. It is also the first graphics card in the world to use the Direct3D 11.1 technology and AMD’s Graphics Core Next GPU architecture and natively supports PCI Express 3.0. Read more »

Desktop Ivy Bridge processors reportedly getting delayed again, this time until Q2 2012

Ivy Bridge seems to be moving away from us every time we get closer – Intel has reportedly told its partners that their next generation desktop CPUs won’t be hitting the market in March-April as previously thought, but instead will come out some time in Q2 2012.

Synaptics shows cool Windows 8 integration, lets you use a laptop’s touchpad as a sort-of touchscreen

The upcoming Windows 8 is a huge jump ahead in terms of touchscreen usability, but some worry that’s at the cost of non-touchscreen usability. Well, Synaptics are showing off a cool concept which uses the touchpad on a laptop to mimic a touchscreen.

The concept is called Synaptics Gesture Suite (SGS) and works surprisingly well for some gestures – switching between app with a horizontal swipe, docking apps to the screen, using tabs in Internet Explorer all seem highly usable and cool. Read more »

Run Android apps on Windows with BlueStacks App Player [VIDEO]

App Player alpha for Windows is a newly released piece of free software from developer BlueStacks. Designed to run on Windows PC’s and tablets, it allows you to run Android apps on your Windows computer or tablet, with no modification to the original app.

App Player lets you run apps windowed or full screen and with their Cloud Connect service, you can share software between your Android and Windows devices easily. Read more »

Thunderbolt support announced for Wintel platform, should be here in 2012

Apple’s implementation of Intel’s Light Peak technology is going places. Intel has now announced that they will be bringing the technology to Windows-based computers as well, with companies like ASUS and Acer joining the bandwagon and getting their products ready for a 2012 launch.

Being the same essential technology, Thunderbolt on these other devices will work the same way as it does on the new range of Mac computers. It will have the same specifications and features that Apple touts for its new range of Macs and will work with the same set of accessories. Read more »

AMD unleashes Radeon-branded DDR3 memory in different versions, price isn’t bad at all

This one is for AMD fans – Radeon-branded, AMD-manufactured DDR3 RAM modules. They will come in three flavors, but all share the same capacity – 2GB. The differences are in clock speed and timings.

The three flavors are Entertainment, ULTRA PRO Gaming and Enterprise. The Entertainment line is clocked at 1333MHz (9-9-9 timings), while the ULTRA PRO Gaming goes at 1600MHz (11-11-11). Read more »

Apple launches $999 iMac, you probably can’t have one

Apple has launched a new $999 iMac, which is now their cheapest iMac. But unlike the other iMacs, you can’t just go to a store and buy one. This one is limited to educational institutions only, so unless your school or college is spending money on these for your computer lab, you probably won’t get to use one.

This model differs slightly from the base $1,199 iMac. The $999 iMac has a slower 3.1GHz dual-core Intel Core i3 processor instead of the faster quad-core Core i5 on the more expensive model. Read more »

Apple launches new 27-inch Thunderbolt Display, comes with additional connectivity options and FaceTime HD

Apple has launched the world’s first Thunderbolt display. This new display is mostly identical to the old 27-inch LED Cinema Display but has a couple of new additions.

The first one is the most obvious. The new Thunderbolt Display uses a Thunderbolt connector instead of a Mini DisplayPort. The Thunderbolt connectivity takes care of the display, sound as well as data transfer. Due to this the new Thunderbolt Display does not have a separate USB cable unlike the old LED Cinema Display. Apple launches new Mac mini, includes new Sandy Bridge processors, AMD graphics and Thunderbolt port, lacks optical drive

Yesterday, Apple also refreshed their cheapest Mac – the Mac mini – along with the MacBook Air. The new Mac mini has the new generation of dual-core Intel Sandy Bridge processors that replaces the Core 2 Duo found on the previous generation model. There are two models now, with the base model having a 2.3GHz Intel Core i5 and the more expensive model running on a 2.5GHz Intel Core i5 and can be configured to 2.7GHz Core i5 through Apple’s online store.

The 2.3GHz model comes with 2GB of RAM whereas the 2.5GHz model comes with 4GB of RAM. Either of these can be configured to have up to 8GB of RAM. Both the models come with a 500GB 5400-rpm hard drive and both can be configured with a 750GB 7200-rpm hard drive with the 2.5GHz model also having the option to be configured with a 256GB SSD or a combination of 256GB SSD and 750GB HDD. Apple becomes the third largest computer vendor in the US in Q2 as the market shrinks in

Two independent analyst companies just published their reports on the computer market in the US and they both show that Apple is now the third largest vendor in the country. The Cupertino-based company has now slotted in front of Toshiba and Acer in terms of units shipped.

Along with Apple, Toshiba is the only other company, which has increased its sales in Q2 2011, compared to Q2 2010. The rest have all taken a step backwards, with Acer taking a particularly painful hit of 22.6% or 25.4%, depending on who you believe. Read more »

The Google Chrome web browser got a new stable release – version 12 – which brings along a safer browsing experience and faster graphic performance.

The Chrome browser got safer with the enhancements added to its Safe Browsing technology. It will warn you if you’re about to enter a site with malicious content or a phishing site (a site, which tricks you into sharing personal and secure information) and will also warn you while trying to download malware. Sony Pictures gets hacked, 1 million accounts compromised, 50,000 released into the torrent wilderness

Someone did it again. The LulzSec hacker group has compromised more than 1 million Sony Pictures accounts and had the opportunity to steal EVERYTHING. But the guys didn’t.

Due to the lack of resources, the hackers copied only a few thousand accounts and released them on various torrent trackers as a proof. Read more »

Samsung starts the mass production of 30nm 32GB RAM modules

You know the deal with RAM, there’s never enough of it. And for those wanting even more RAM, Samsung starts mass producing 32GB RAM modules based on 30nm process.

Earlier in the year the company started manufacturing 30nm-based 4GB DDR3 RAM modules, which are the foundation for the new massive 32GB RAM units. Read more »
