Swype beta for Android now available without registration

Swype, the quick-type keyboard for Android, has had its beta version become available for download to anyone without the need to register.

The new beta features include a Smart Editor that lets you quickly edit a typed sentence, and Living Language, which suggests trending and popular words. Read more »

Samsung announces a handful of connected Smart Cameras, touts them in a video ad

Samsung announced its new lineup of Smart Cameras 2.0 at CES 2013. Featuring no less than six new models, the new Smart Camera lineup allows users to share their images directly from the camera or to control the camera with their Android smartphone or tablet.

The new camera models include the WB250F/WB200F, the WB800F, WB30F, DV150F and ST150F. The Samsung WB250F and WB200F are identical but the latter uses a CCD sensor instead of a backlit CMOS one and it doesn’t shoot 1080p video unlike its CMOS sibling. Read more »

Sony shows voice control enabled remote for Google TV, NFC-enabled wireless speakers

With the big ticket items out of the way, we can turn our attention to the other gadgets that Sony has brought to CES. The company has a new range of four NFC-equipped speakers to work with the One-Touch tech that Sony introduced with the new Sony Xperia Z and Xperia ZL smartphones.

Sony introduces a wide range of camcorders with optional projectors, there’s a 3D camcorder too

Besides point-and-shoot cameras, Sony also announced a wide range of camcorders last night. The new offerings range from the entry-level $250 camera and move up the range adding features along the way. The cameras have versions with a built-in projector and the higher-end models have manual controls.

Sony announces five new point-and-shoot cameras, all pack 360-degree panorama mode

The new Xperia Z and ZL were the stars of the Sony show yesterday, but the Japanese company also unveiled a number of digital cameras. Five new point and shoot cameras debuted and they are all pretty feature-packed.

Potentially the most popular of the new cameras will be the CyberShot WX80 – a $200 camera with a 16.2MP sensor, 8x optical zoom (25-200mm), 1080i60 video capture and built-in Wi-Fi. Read more »

Sony posts a video detailing the technology behind the Xperia Z

Sony seems to be really proud of its hotly announced Xperia Z flagship smartphone as it has posted pretty lengthy video dedication to its key selling points including really cool close-up shots.

In the video, Sony Community Manager Marcus Hansson details the Z’s powerful chipset and, as you can see in the photo above, its IP57 certification. Read more »

If you’d like to know what beats a lengthy live streaming of a hot device announcement – that would be the shorter edited version, which only shows the highlights. Good for us, because we now have the highlights video of Huawei’s press conference, held yesterday at CES 2013 in Las Vegas. The event saw the announcement of the Huawei Ascend Mate and the Ascend D2.

Last night Huawei’s press conference was not streamed live (unlike Samsung’s and Sony’s) so we were kinda left out of the fun. Luckily, we had our own reporters there so we knew what was going on.

Firefox for Android to get private browsing and themes in 2013

The devs over at Mozilla are obviously so happy with how their baby mobile Firefox is going that they’ve decided the spill the beans on some of the upcoming features in 2013.

AMD refreshes its Radeon GPU lineup with the HD 8000 for desktop and HD 8000M for notebooks

AMD used the press day before the start of CES to announce its latest Radeon 8000 series of desktop and mobile graphics.

Based on AMD’s Graphics Core Next architecture, all cards are built using the 28nm manufacturing process and come with support for Direct X 11.1 graphics. Read more »

Sony announces 56-inch 4K OLED TV and 4K video distribution service

Sony took to the CES floor today to showcase their new 56-inch, 4K OLED TV prototype. You can probably tell from these limited specs (frankly the only ones you need to know) that it is going to look stunning and showgoers have reported that it does indeed.

Samsung showcases world’s largest, 85-inch 4K television

As promised back in November, Samsung showcased their first 4K television to the world. As it happens, at a monstrous 85-inches, it is also the world’s largest 4K television in the world.

The Samsung UN85S9, as it is called, features a unique floating design. The panel is held up by the sides within a metal frame, which gives the impression of it floating in the center. As you can see, the designers haven’t really been successful in simulating that effect but nonetheless the design is striking. Read more »

Polaroid releases mirrorless camera with Android

Polaroid has officially launched the iM1836 interchangeable lens camera here at CES, complete with Android 4.1.
