Windows goes free for devices with under 9-inch displays

Among a bevy of announcements, Microsoft had another announcement to make regarding the cost of Windows Phone and Windows to OEMs who’d want to license it for their devices.

According to the announcement, Windows and Windows Phone will now be available for free to manufacturers for use on devices with displays smaller than 9-inches. This includes all smartphones and small tablets with 8-inch displays. Read more »

Twitter web adds support for emoji

Over the years, emoji has managed to occupy a considerable portion of our text based communication. Those with devices capable of entering and viewing emoji often use them on social networking sites such as Twitter. However, even today, several major platforms and browsers don’t natively support emoji, which leads to their users not seeing the text the way they should be.

To solve this problem to quite an extent, Twitter has now started identifying emoji in tweets and replacing them with their own custom emoji on the web that can be viewed regardless of the platform or the browser. Read more »

Amazon Fire TV set-top box goes official, available today

As expected, Amazon took the wraps off its own set-top box today. Dubbed Amazon Fire TV, the $99 gadget will compete with the likes of Apple TV, Google Chromecast, and Roku 3 in today’s competitive marketplace.

Windows 8.1 update announced

Microsoft has officially announced an update to its Windows 8.1 operating system at the company’s BUILD conference in San Francisco. The Windows 8.1 update will be available for all Windows 8.1 consumers, starting April 8.

The Windows 8.1 update is focused on the navigational features of mouse and keyboard. The taskbar has also seen a significant change and you can now see taskbar in all metro apps when they move the cursor to the bottom of the screen. Read more »

Windows Phone 8.1 developer preview launches on April 10

With Windows Phone 8.1 now official, everyone is eager to try it out. Microsoft plans to make the Windows Phone 8.1 Preview available for registered developers on April 10 – eight days from today.

Everybody can register as a developer in the Developer Preview Program by downloading a special app on the Windows Phone Store and sign up for a free App Studio account. This will give you access to install Windows Phone 8.1 weeks before carriers and manufacturers start pushing it to Windows Phone 8 devices. Read more »

Skype for WP updated with voice commands support

Microsoft introduced its new WP 8.1 mobile operating system at its BUILD conference in San Francisco. Jeo Belfiore, the head of Windows Phone group while demonstrating the Windows Phone 8.1 features with Cortana voice assistant also revealed that the Skype application for WP has been updated. The new version is not yet available for the general public, but it should launch in time for the WP 8.1 debut.

The latest version of Skype for Windows Phone 8.1 comes with support for Cortana voice commands. This means you can tell Cortana to Skype one of your contacts and the virtual assistant will launch the application and call whoever it is that you need without even having to touch your smartphone. Micromax and Prestigio join the Windows Phone game

Microsoft at its on-going BUILD conference in San Francisco announced two new hardware partners in Micromax and Prestigio for its Windows Phone ecosystem. We even got a glimpse of two actual phones that are currently being developed by each of the companies, although no details were provided.

Both the OEMs are quite popular in their home countries and as a matter of fact, Micromax is one of the biggest smartphone manufacturer in India, which is the world’s second largest country by population. Read more »

2.1 million Chromebooks were shipped last year

Over the span of last year around 2.1 million Chromebooks have been shipped. The majority of those numbers come from North America – exactly 89% – giving the continent the highest demand in the world.

The numbers were calculated by ABI Research and the firm forecasts an increase to 11 million in 2019, but who can really say what can happen in five years (less than five years ago Symbian was top OS). Read more »
