Nokia Lumia 1520 might get Miracast support, older WP devices have no chance

Microsoft introduced its latest mobile operating system, Windows Phone 8.1 a few days ago. Back at its announcement, the Redmond giant did mention that the newest OS supports Miracast, but we now know that the wireless screen casting service would require new hardware to work and will not be available on all WP 8.1 devices.

According to a tweet from Joe Belfiore, the head of Windows Phone group, Miracast would require new hardware and Nokia Lumia 1520 might be the only device to qualify. Read more »

The Sony Xperia Z2 Tablet is one of the hottest new pieces of Android hardware – it’s hard to believe how thin and light it is until you hold it in your hand. At 6.4mm thick, there’s not much room so the tablet uses a 6,000mAh battery, the same capacity as the previous model.

Snapdragon 801 is a power-efficient chipset (it’s in phones with less than half the battery capacity), but there’s still a 10.1″ screen, which would probably be the main power drain. Read more »

Upcoming Android TV gets detailed before announcement

Leaked documents and screenshots obtained by The Verge reveal that Google is about to launch a new take on home entertainment. Dubbed Android TV, the service will take on the likes of Apple TV, Amazon Fire TV, and Roku.

Microsoft revealed its newest operating system – Windows Phone 8.1 at its BUILD conference in San Francisco. One of the most talked about features of the WP 8.1 is its virtual personal assistant, dubbed Cortana.

During the announcement of WP 8.1 OS, Joe Belfiore confirmed that Cortana will be available in the US at first with the UK and China following up next. However, tech enthusiasts have found a way to use the service, regardless of where you roll. Read more »

Google Play People rounds up your friends’ app suggestions

Google is rolling out a new feature to its Google Play store dubbed People. You know how you see your friends’ +1s on certain apps in the Play Store? Well now those apps have their separate own tab.

The People tab utilizes Google+’s recommendations in the Play Store in its mobile form and has its very own certain style – shown above. On the web Google Play store you can see the same reviews and ratings by your friends with the “From Familiar Faces” option. The new feature is rolling out as we speak so you might want to check your Play store to see if you have it already. Read more »

Samsung launches Galaxy S5 wireless charging covers

Samsung has officially launched the wireless charging cover for its flagship smartphone, the Galaxy S5. The new accessory will be available in two options – a standard back plate with Qi charging module and S-View flip cover model.

The wireless charging back covers for Galaxy S5 come with perforated holes and look identical to the stock cover. The company has managed to retain the gaskets from the original design in both models and this means that your Galaxy S5 with an external cover will continue to be water resistant. Read more »

Nokia X synthetic benchmarks

Here is another teaser for our upcoming Nokia X review – benchmark scores! We were able to make some tests shortly after the Nokia X was announced on the MWC in Barcelona, but this time around we can finally run all benchmarks on a retail-ready unit.

The Nokia X is powered by a dual-core 1GHz Cortex-A5 processor coupled with half a gig RAM, which should be barely enough to run a standard Android Jelly Bean version. Luckily Nokia has done some great work optimizing the Android OS and its proprietary launcher, so the final OS is relatively smooth and snappy, with almost no visible lag. The apps from the Nokia Store run great too. Read more »

Will.i.am of Black Eyed peas fame, a former Blackberry proponent, and Intel’s Director of Creative Innovation, has announced that he plans on releasing a smartwatch this July. He was even wearing a prototype of the device on Alan Carr’s show: Chatty Man. Read more »

12 million iPads now have Office installed

It has only been a week since Microsoft launched its Office suite on the Apple iPad but it has already been downloaded more than 12 million times.

Microsoft seems really pleased by this so it went on Twitter to boast a little. Office offers free viewing Word, Excel and PowerPoint documents. In order to edit and create, however, one would need to shell out $10 a month for Office 365 subscription. How many of those has Microsoft secured since the apps became available on the iPad isn’t disclosed. Read more »
