Windows Mobile is dead, long live Windows Ph… Mobile? This could all be a misunderstanding, of course, but the LinkedIn profile of a Program Manager at Microsoft lists him as currently working on Windows Mobile 10.

Nokia Lumia 930 Rich Capture mode demoed, yields great results

Improved camera performance and new shooting modes were only two of the upgrades brought by the Lumia Denim update, but for smartphones such as the Lumia 930 they are certainly among the more important ones. The high-profile cameraphones got HDR capabilities as a part of its latest update and now we get to see the feature in action.

HTC offers 20% discount for any phone until January 2

HTC has been holding a weekly deal on its official website for the US for a while now. Unlike past offers, though, today’s deal isn’t going to expire in mere hours. In fact, it’s valid all the way up until January 2. If you purchase any handset from HTC’s website before then, you can get a 20% discount.

That’s a nice holiday deal, and you may want to take advantage of it if you haven’t yet bought gifts for those close to you. New Lumia Moments app lets you extract Living Images from videos

Microsoft has released a new application that lets you extract great stills from your videos or Moment shots (4K or FullHD). Dubbed Lumia Moments, the app is available on select Lumia devices, including Lumia 830, Lumia 930, Lumia Icon, and 1520, as part of the recent Lumia Denim update.

The app provides a Best Frame option that lets you find pictures and save them as Living Images — photos that contain a brief moment of video, so they seem alive when you browse them in Camera Roll or Lumia Storyteller. There is also an Action Shot feature that lets you add a strobe effect to show action or add blur to emphasize motion. Read more »

Nokia stops developing HERE maps on WP, Microsoft takes over

Nokia will no longer be updating the HERE mapping and navigation apps on the Windows Phone platform. Although originally created by Nokia, the map data has now been licensed by Microsoft, who will now be updating the app instead.

Angry Birds Stella finally arrives on Windows Phone

Many months after it launched for iOS and Android, Angry Birds Stella has today become available for Windows Phone. As you may have expected, it’s a free download, but does feature in-app purchases.

BBM takes stickers, Timed Messages, and Message Retraction to Windows Phone

BBM for Windows Phone has been updated to version 2.0 today, and there is a lot of new functionality inside. The Timed Messages and Message Retraction features that made their debut on the other mobile platforms back in October have finally landed on Windows Phone on this occasion.

Gestures Beta for Windows Phone automatically mutes your mic, puts call on speaker

Aside from the Glance Screen update we just reported on, Microsoft has something else for Windows Phone fans today. It is, in fact, a new app, currently in Beta. It’s called Gestures, and it automates some tasks based on how you hold or move your phone.

Glance Screen for Windows Phone now lets you set a background image

The Glance Screen functionality for Windows Phones lets you see some information while your phone is in standby. The time, weather, alarms, calendar events all show up there along with info about missed calls and received messages. And today, the Glance Screen app itself has seen an update.

Windows Phone apps show up in Windows 10 store

The recent leak of a Windows 10 consumer build (9901) has provided tech-enthusiast and Windows fans alike with information on a lot of previously unannounced features of the upcoming OS release. And while Xbox and Cortana integration are obviously on their way we are yet to see one of the exciting features boasted by Microsoft – ability to run Windows Phone applications on a desktop Windows distribution.

The leaked Windows 10 build in question has given us a possible glimpse of precisely this feature. An interesting picture popped up on twitter, showing HTC’s “Make More Space” app listed in the Windows 10 Store. The application is clearly intended for Windows phone, as evident from its listing. Microsoft announces January 21 event for Windows 10 consumer presentation

Microsoft will hold a Windows 10-related event on Wednesday, January 21, 2015. Terry Myerson, Joe Belfiore, and Phil Spencer from the Operating Systems Group will all be speaking, as will CEO Satya Nadella.

The company has only published its official invite for now (which you can see above), choosing not to specifically say what the event will be about. However, a rumor from last month said we’d hear all about the consumer-facing features of Windows 10 for PCs “towards the end of January”. So this seems to be that. If so, then on this occasion Microsoft will also talk about Windows 10 on phones and tablets for the first time. Read more »
