Indian customers order XOLO Q900s Windows Phone, receive Android version

Well, this is an odd one. It looks like Flipkart, India’s biggest online retailer, has mistakenly sent people who ordered the new XOLO Win Q900s an Android-running version of the device. To be clear, the XOLO Win Q900s should run Windows Phone 8.1, the latest version of Microsoft’s mobile OS.

Cortana beats Siri in new Microsoft ad

Microsoft has a new ad out and it pits Windows Phone 8.1′s virtual assistant Cortana against Apple’s own Siri in a fight to prove which is the best.

The assistants battle on the grounds of a Lumia 635 and iPhone 5s. Microsoft naturally picks its strong suits asking Cortana for things it knows it can do like set up a reminder for the next time a contact calls. Read more »

British Cortana to sound different than her American counterpart

One of Windows Phone 8.1′s headline features is Cortana, the Siri-like voice assistant built into the OS. Unfortunately, the feature so far only works in the US, but it will soon be coming to the UK, with a difference.

As you may know, the US version of Cortana is voiced by Jen Taylor, the same person who provided the voice for Cortana in the Halo series of games, from where the feature is borrowed for Windows Phone. Microsoft’s mobile division sure seems to be proud of the recently unveiled Nokia Lumia 530. This, you may remember, is the successor to the best selling Lumia 520, and it will become available in August.

Nokia creates an organic charger for the Lumia 930

Nokia has set up an interesting project to promote the Lumia 930 in the UK. What seems to be a product of a joint meeting with Greenpeace is actually a giant wall made of potatoes and apples. Why? To charge up a phone.

Some of you may know this, but for others this is a headscratcher. The process of charging the battery using potatoes and apples is possible thanks to the chemicals inside them, which help transfer energy via the metal wires. Read more »

Nokia Lumia 530 will be available at T-Mobile

T-Mobile is the first US-based carrier which has confirmed that it will sell the new Nokia Lumia 530. The handset was officially unveiled mere hours ago.

In the magenta carrier’s portfolio it will serve as the successor to the Lumia 521, which itself was TMo’s own version of the best selling Lumia 520 – the new device’s international predecessor. Read more »

Early access contest winners of ‘Modern Combat 5: Blackout’ cracked and pirated the game

File this under ‘This is why we can’t have nice things’. In fact, those were the exact words of Gameloft community manager on the game’s Facebook page. And he does have every right to be annoyed.

As it happens, Gameloft gave away early access copies of the iOS version of their latest Modern Combat 5: Blackout game to contest winners. Instead of being thankful and playing the game as they were expected, some of these people cracked the game and uploaded it on pirating sites. Read more »

Modern Combat 5: Blackout is the latest installment in Gameloft’s series of first person action games. The games have traditionally been based on warfare and very close in nature and style to the Call of Duty series of games on the PC and consoles.

The Modern Combat series has taken it up a notch with every installment, with improved visuals, more explosive action and expanded gameplay options every time. Nokia’s latest Lumia offering has hit our offices, and we’ll be giving you a quick tour of the Nokia Lumia 930 before it gets whisked away for our comprehensive review.

The Lumia 930 is the international variant of the Nokia Lumia Icon released in the US for Verizon earlier this year, and is one of the first devices to sport Microsoft’s new Windows Phone 8.1 update out of box.

The Lumia 930 sports a 5-inch 1080p AMOLED of Nokia’s ClearBlack variety, which we unfortunately found to color shift severely towards red/blue when viewed from different angles – a problem that we’ve also seen in past Nokia AMOLEDs. The chipset is of the MSM8974 Snapdragon 800 variety, with four 2.2GHz Krait 400 cores, and an Adreno 330 GPU. There’s 2GB of RAM on board alongside 32GB of non-expandable storage, all powered by a 2420mAh battery. Read more »

The Nokia Lumia 930 is starring in a new advertisement accenting in its wireless charging capabilities. The ad is posted by the UK branch of the company and displays the Lumia 930 in various environments doing its wireless charging thing with the DC-50 portable wireless charger.

It’s not really surprising that the ad is coming from UK, considering the phone comes with the accessory as a bonus in the country. You also get the MD-12 Wireless speakers if get the smartphone in Britain. Read more »
