Microsoft redesigns SkyDrive.com, has an Android app headed your way in the coming weeks

In order to bring it in line with its latest software creations such as the Windows Phone OS and Windows 8, Microsoft has completed a thorough redesign of SkyDrive.com. Along with its new web interface, the software giant’s cloud service sports a number of improvements to its functionality.

‘Metro UI’ name dropped in favor of ‘Windows 8 UI’, or is it ‘Modern UI’?

The term “Metro”, describing Microsoft’s new user interface design gained popularity starting with Windows Phone 7 after its Zune HD beginnings. It really grew into prominence when it became the UI style for Windows 8 and now, not long before its scheduled late October launch date, Microsoft renamed it.

A leaked memo was the first sign that the name “Metro” is on the way out, supposedly due to copyright concerns. “Windows 8 style interface” was suggested as a replacement, but Microsoft may have settled on a simpler name. Read more »

Screenshots of WhatsApp for Windows Phone leak

You may be aware of the fact that the WhatsApp app was recently pulled from the Windows Marketplace as the developers are working on a new version of the multi-platform IM application.

Now, Windows Phone Daily has managed to snag some screenshots of what seems like the Windows 8 version of the application. These screenshots were obtained from the WhatsApp media page in a folder called Apollo. Read more »

Microsoft drops the Metro code name allegedly over legal issues

Metro has been Microsoft’s code name for the user interface that they debuted with the Zune HD back in 2009 and has been a major part of their UI design language in Windows Phone as well as the upcoming Windows 8 desktop operating system.

Well, the UI isn’t going anywhere but the name is. Microsoft has stopped using the Metro name for the UI effective immediately and has also asked the developers to stop using it in their apps. The reason for this sudden change is rumored to be due to legal issues with a German company over the name. Read more »

Windows Phone 8 emulator confirms rumored built-in screenshot feature

Many people were unhappy with the Windows Phone 7 lack of native screenshot capture support. It wasn’t the WP7’s deal breaker, but still it was a feature the competition was offering for quite some time.

Nokia Transport drops the Beta moniker, available for free on your Lumia

The Lumia brand is more popular than Windows Phone in web searches

Nokia’s Lumia series of smartphones might have become more popular than the Windows Phone operating system as a whole. Or at least that’s what the Google search statistics might lead you to believe.

A quick look at said stats shows that since its launch late last year, Nokia has made a good job of keeping the Lumia brand in the public eye. Sadly for Microsoft, that’s not the case with Windows Phone. Read more »

Windows Phone 8 to possibly get the new Arc Soft keyboard

Single handed typing on smartphones can often be a slow and frustrating process (unless you have something like Swype). It seems, though, that Microsoft may have a solution for this problem in the form of the new Arc Soft keyboard for Windows Phone 8 devices.

As you can see above the keyboard is curved so that all the keys are well within your thumb’s reach. In addition to that, the keyboard reduces the number of keys by assigning multiple characters to a single key. Read more »

Bing Maps gets its largest update to date – 165TB worth of aerial imagery

Bing Maps has received a huge update, amassing a total of 165 terabytes of information and imagery. This is the largest update to the mapping service ever and it’s larger than all of the past Aerial releases combined! To give you a little perspective the prior existing Aerial coverage of Bing Maps was 129 terabytes in total.

The update brings high-quality aerial photos of North America, South America, Africa, Australia, Europe and Asia with the total covered area being around 38 million square kilometers or roughly Russia’s land area multiplied by two plus the whole of India. Pretty impressive stuff. Read more »

Yesterday, Microsoft announced the newest version of their mobile operating system, Windows Phone 8. But while it’s a solid upgrade over the current Windows Phone 7.5, those who own the current devices have been left in the lurch, with just the new homescreen and a couple of minor features being offered as part of the Windows Phone 7.8 update.

Naturally, the people are upset about it, since companies like Nokia were launching their flagship products like the Lumia 900 based on Windows Phone 7.5 not too long ago and people bought these thinking that they will be upgraded to Windows Phone 8 in future and get all the new features. At the Windows Phone Summit which ended just moments ago, Microsoft announced the WP Marketplace has now crossed the 100,000 apps mark.

New Dark Knight Rises trailer emerges to promote Nokia Lumia 900 Batman edition

Despite manufacturing just 900 units of its special limited edition Batman Lumia 900, Nokia continues its promotion of the Windows Phone 7 handset by launching a new, unseen Dark Knight Rises trailer. And we couldn’t be happier.
