It was iFixit that first tore down the Nexus 7 tablet and as a result we can now see how much money Google is making from selling the device itself.

For the 8GB model, the margin is pretty slim (if it exists at all) as its parts were estimated to cost $184 while it sells for $199. That’s a small profit margin whichever way you look at it, and this price doesn’t even factor in manufacturing, marketing, shipping or research and development. Read more »

The Kindle Fire has been quite a success thanks to its humble pricing and the might of Amazon’s online store, which puts the tablet front and center on the homepage of the world’s most popular online store. But it’s been seven months now since it’s been on sale and by now Amazon should be working on a successor. The fact that Google just launched a rival in the form of the Nexus 7 and that Apple might be working on one as well means that Amazon cannot afford to rest on its laurels.

Fortunately, it hasn’t. According to a report by AllThingsD, Amazon is planning to release the successor to the current Kindle Fire some time in Q3, this year with the announcement coming some time in the second half of this year. Read more »

Image persistence is a problem with LCD and plasma displays where if a certain image is displayed continuously on the screen for a long time, it gets “burned in”, which means even after the contents of the screen change, you can still faintly see the previous image on top of the current contents of the screen. Unlike screen burn-in, this effect is temporary but can still be annoying.

This issue was common on plasma displays but was greatly reduced on LCDs. It seems, however, the display on the new Nexus 7 is not one of them. Read more »

The battle between Chinese company Proview and Apple regarding the ‘iPad’ trademark is not new but it has now finally come to an end, with both parties deciding to settle and with Apple having paid $60 million to Proview to use the iPad trademark.

This whole thing started two years ago when Proview sued Apple for purchasing the rights for the ‘iPad’ trademark through a subsidiary named IP Application Development Ltd. for £35,000. Read more »

Google may not be seeding Jelly Bean to users until mid-July, but the company’s Android team has already uploaded the factory image of the Nexus 7 tablet online.

There has hardly been any doubt that the freshly announced Google Nexus 7 would be a solid performer on the benchmark arena. After all, NVIDIA’s Tegra 3 chipset with four CPU cores is a well known powerhouse by now. However, we couldn’t help but be curious about the way Google’s slate would stack up against the well-established, higher priced players on the tablet market.

The Google Nexus 7 tablet is finally official and it’s time to see if it can do the job it’s meant for – be a real-world alternative to the Amazon Kindle Fire and the Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 7.0.

The Android tablet manufacturers (except for Asus and its Transformer prime) learned the hard way that their tablets need to be as affordable as possible to gain some traction. The long rumored Google Nexus tablet manufactured by ASUS has revealed its specs and its pretty face thanks to a leaked internal training document. And here’s what it’ll probably look like.

You all remember the sleek hardware that Microsoft presented last week. Called Surface, the tablet has two versions – one with a Tegra 3 chipset, running Windows 8 RT, and another one with a proper x64 processor by Intel – that one running regular Windows 8 Pro. We’ve all been wondering what sort of pricing would the new tablets have.
