Sony Xperia Z1 and Compact get 4K and timeshift video recording

While the Sony Xperia Z2 solidified its position as in-house top dog with a more powerful Snapdragon 801 chip and 3 GB of RAM many an Xperia Z1 and Z1 Compact owner wished to get some of its features like 4K video recording and Timeshift 720p@120 fps slow motion recording.

Seeing as how both smartphones feature a Snapdragon 800 chip one would guess they could handle it hardware-wise. And now thanks to some savvy folks over at the XDA devs forum the two features have been successfully ported. Read more »

Google updates YouTube app for Android with resolution options

Google has released an update for the YouTube app on Android. The only major change is that you can now choose what resolution you stream the video at rather than have the app select it for you.

Now, when you click on the menu button in the video and tap on the gear icon, you will get a list of resolution options, from the eye-watering 144p all the way to 1080p. The max resolution will depend upon the video, of course. Even if you do come across a 4K video, however, the max setting is still 1080p. Read more »

Google will flag faulty search results on mobile

It’s happened to all of us – searching on Google on our mobile devices, tapping an article result and getting redirected to the website’s mobile homepage instead of the article we wanted. Well Google’s noticed and will start flagging such faulty links in its English results in the US so that we know before we tap.

But aside from leaving a comment – “May open the site’s homepage” – Google will still give you a Try anyway button if you’re eager to tread into the unknown. We hope the new feature makes its way outside of the US soon. Read more »

Temple run scores 1 billion downloads

Imangi studios, the developer behind the super popular endless runner series Temple Run, had a cool milestone to share today. Its titles have reached 1 billion downloads across the platforms where they are available.

The company includes both versions of Temple Run in the number, but not the Disney spin-offs Brave and Oz. All games are available on what are currently the top three smartphone platforms – Android, iOS and Windows Phone. Some of the titles also have BlackBerry 10 and Windows RT versions. Read more »

Nova Launcher 3.0 is out, supports “Ok, Google” commands

Nova Launcher is one of the most popular homescreen replacement apps for Android and today it got an update to version 3.0. We featured the app back in our Android for beginners guide and dubbed it as one of the best in its category.

With the latest Nova Launcher version, there are a number of cool new features, chief among which is the ability to make Google searches by saying “Ok, Google”. This command is taken from the Google Experience Launcher and is now available in a number of other launchers as well. Read more »
