Google Maps got treated to an update for both Android and iOS. Versions 7.7 and 3.0 of the app for Android and iOS respectively bring new features and welcome tweaks to the platform.

Treading the fine line between convenient and creepy, Google has added yet another feature to Google Now that goes through your personal information and suggests something relevant.

This time, it’s cards that tell you when a certain product is available in a store near you. If you walk past a store, Google Now will show a card with items and their pricing available in that store, items that you have looked up in the past and are interested in purchasing. Read more »

Google has released a flurry of updates for some of its key apps on Android, including Google Search, Play Music and Play Games.

The first is the Search app (version 3.4.15.1143430.arm), which gets a cool new addition. The app will now try and determine the position of your car when you park it, so when you return you know where to find it on the map. Read more »

Popular photo messaging service Snapchat is adding two new features to its repertoire. The service is known for being able to send photos across that automatically disappear after a short time. Now, users will also get the option to do video calls and send text messages, in a way that fits Snapchat’s personality.

The new app will have the same basic interface design as the current version, but if you were to swipe right on the name of a contact in your inbox, you start a text chat with them. Here you can type and send messages, which disappear automatically when the other person reads them. Similarly, the messages they send disappear from your phone after you read them, unless you tap on them to save them. Read more »

Facebook has announced two new ways of logging into apps using your Facebook account. The ability to log into other services using your Facebook account has always been a convenient option but the cost of that convenience was giving away your personal information to an app that you may not fully trust.

With the new Anonymous Login feature, you can now log into services without giving away any personal information. You will see the option to login anonymously on apps that support this feature along with the standard Facebook Login. Read more »

The original Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 slate was released in August, 2012, initially running on Android 4.0.3 Ice Cream Sandwich. Samsung released only one firmware update during the past two years flavoring the tablet with Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean OS.

Nowadays there are already two new Note tablets – Note 10.1 2014 Edition and Note Pro 12.2, but as it turns out the pioneer was not forgotten. After the LG G2 received its KitKat update we decided to see what’s what and check out if the phone’s performance has seen drastic changes compared to its Jelly Bean state. We re-tested the battery performance and now it’s time to put the chipset through its paces.

The battery performance showed a leap from a 62 hour endurance rating to an 81 hour one, which was mainly due to a much-improved stand by time. As for the benchmarks, well, there’s a different story here. Note that KitKat brings faster multitasking because of optimized memory usage, which should aid in better benchmarking scores. WhatsApp has released an update for Android (v2.11.230) that brings with it the highly requested group muting settings.

Anyone who has used WhatsApp groups would know how annoying some of them can get over time and there was no way to permanently mute them. The latest update, however, adds some new options that lets you mute a group beyond one week, all the way up to a century. Read more »
