iBooks for iOS just got a major update in time for the holiday season. Version 1.5 brings a welcome new feature set to the eReader app, including new view modes, new fonts and notable improvements on existing features too.

The popular developer of anti-virus applications for Windows Avast has just released its first mobile app. Dubbed avast! Mobile Security, it aims to keep your beloved smartphone safe and protected from all possible threats.

One of the most popular 3rd party launchers for Android devices got an update today, which brought a host of new features and some nice visual tune-ups. ADW Launcher Ex 1.3.3.5 comes with most of the eye-candy that you normally associate with Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich.

The update should allow the Launcher Ex to play nice with the host Ice Cream Sandwich smartphones and tablets, which are bound to come at the start of 2012. Microsoft has divulged some juicy details regarding the upcoming Windows Store for Windows 8. Like any application store, this will be a unified location to download apps on your Windows 8 device and will be your only source for downloading Metro-style apps.

First of all, the Store will open its doors to developers starting February, 2012. Developers can create an account by paying $49 and after that proceed to develop apps for the platform. Read more »

Facebook is getting ready to refresh its arsenal on Android. The software engineers of the behemoth social network are putting the finishing touches on version 1.8 of the Facebook app for Android and there will be a whole new app coming to the Google platform in the near future.

The new version of the app brings slightly cleaner UI and should supposedly improve navigation, menu and search functionality. We should be hearing more about it in the near future, when it is expected to hit the Android Market. Read more »

Due to its relatively low popularity Windows Phone was having far less trouble with piracy until recently. Now though, Nokia joined the party and changed a couple of things. The interest towards the platform spiked and that drew the attention of the hacking community.

Google and Australian telecommunications company Telstra have joined forces to launch the world’s first store dedicated to Android. Called the Androidland, it’s not just a place to buy Android devices but also where you can experience all the different features in the OS and just enjoy yourself.

There is a lot to do in this Android-themed store, decked in the traditional Android green color. You can play Angry Birds on a giant touchscreen display, Androidify yourself or check out the world on a massive display using Google Earth. They have even gone as far as to have a gingerbread scent in the store and a grass scent where there is grass. The mythical creature known as the Verizon Galaxy Nexus has been spotted in the wild and much to the surprise of its spotters was found running some Verizon apps. As you may know, the Nexus phones have been known to come with a stock ROM from Google with nothing but Google’s own applications installed. The Galaxy Nexus will be the first to break this tradition and have some bloatware courtesy of Verizon, tarnishing the name of the Nexus brand forever.

It’s not all bad news, however. If you may recall, Ice Cream Sandwich comes with the ability to disable unwanted applications from the Settings menu. Read more »

Ever since Google announced the Galaxy Nexus and along with it Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, those of us with a Nexus S have been salivating at the chance of getting it on our own devices. Unfortunately, Google did not give any official date as to when the update will be made available for download.

It seems now, however, that it won’t be too long now. A Google employee posted on Google+ that he got the Ice Cream Sandwich on his Nexus S and that ‘it’s looking great’. The update was later on deleted from the site but you can see a screenshot below. Read more »

You may have heard or seen Nokia’s Live View app, an augmented reality software that shows you names and location of objects around you using the phone’s camera, GPS, compass and accelerometer. It’s similar to the Layar app found on iOS and Android.

The app has now been updated and brings performance enhancements, along with some bug fixes. Also in the list of changes is a new list view mode (seen below) other than the camera viewfinder mode and a tutorial to guide you through the Live View usage and feature set. Read more »

Samsung S8600 Wave 3 is the first device to come with the latest 2.0 version of the Bada OS. It’s a worthy successor of the first ever released Wave – the S8500. The third generation comes with a bigger SuperAMOLED screen, a faster processor, a nice aluminium shell and a familiar design.

Citing sources close to Microsoft, TheNextWeb, claims that the Windows 8 public beta is set for release in February 2012.

There’s nothing set in stone so, you know, don’t hold your breath until we hear something official. Still it doesn’t seem that unlikely as Windows 8 is expected in 2012 anyway and the MWC 2012 is a big event, a fitting place for presenting a converged desktop/mobile OS. The next iteration of Microsoft’s OS will be the first to be designed to work on both desktops and mobile devices like tablets. Read more »
