Last week we reported that the mobile web version of Google Maps service was no longer accessible through the Internet Explorer browser on Windows Phone devices. Although the service wasn’t officially supported because Internet Explorer does not run on the WebKit engine that the site is optimized for, it did used to work somehow until Google pulled the plug, citing incompatibility reasons.

Now, one week and lots of outrage later, the Google Maps website is once again accessible through Internet Explorer on Windows Phone. Admittedly, it won’t run as flawlessly as it does on iOS or Android devices because it’s still optimized for WebKit but at least you can use it now. Read more »

It seems several Windows Phone 8 users trying to use the web version of the Google Maps service through the browser on their phones are being denied access, with the browser now redirecting to Google’s homepage.

Although Google Maps was never technically supported on the Internet Explorer browser on WP8 (because it is optimized for use only on browsers running on the WebKit engine) it used to work to some extent before. Now, however, it doesn’t work at all. Read more »

Popular instant messaging service WhatsApp has made their iOS client free of cost for a limited time. Unlike on other platforms, the iOS version of WhatsApp has an upfront cost of $0.99 for the client.

WhatsApp is available on several other platforms, including Android, Windows Phone, BlackBerry OS, Symbian and even Nokia Series 40. However, on other platforms, the application is free to download and use for a year, after which there is a $0.99 yearly fee. Read more »

Couple of days ago, popular social network Instagram announced their new Privacy Policy and Terms of Service, which would be effective starting January 16, 2013.

Unfortunately for them, the new documents resulted in a major outcry from the users because they made it sound like Instagram would be using your photos to sell them to advertisers, which resulted in a lot of people deleting their accounts. After being dropped out of iOS 6 by Apple, the YouTube app became a standalone application that had to be downloaded from the App Store. But one of the biggest shortcomings of this app was that it was meant only for content consumption, and there was no way to upload videos from it.

Google has now released a separate application for the iPhone and iPod touch, whose only purpose is recording videos and uploading them on YouTube. You can shoot and do quick editing to your videos from within the app itself or upload one of your existing videos. Read more »

Last week we told you that popular instant messaging service WhatsApp will soon be making an appearance on the new Windows Phone 8 platform, and it has.

WhatsApp is now available on devices running Windows Phone 8. As before, it’s free for the first year and then it’s $0.99 per year. The application is similar to the one on Windows Phone 7.5 in every way, which has also been updated to v2.8.10. Read more »

Google recently incorporated the ability to recognize songs in the latest Google Search update. Now they have released a standalone app that can be installed on Android.

Called Sound Search for Google Play, the app takes the form of a widget that you can keep on your homescreen and tap when you want to find out what song is playing near you. Other than guessing which song it is, the Sound Search app also provides a link to purchase it on Google Play and maintains a list of your searches, that can be synced across your Android devices for future reference. Google has updated the Google Currents application to v2.0, which brings with it some really nice changes. First of all, the UI has been changed and looks nothing like the previous version. It now has more in common with some of the other recent Google Android apps, such as YouTube and Google+.

The application features a new editions list that can be accessed from swiping from the left side of the screen. You see all your categories and the selected sources within. You can customize this list by adding or removing the sources. Read more »

If you have the Microsoft SkyDrive app on your iOS device, you may have noticed that it hasn’t been updated since June. It’s not because Microsoft hasn’t been working on an update for the app but because Apple has been holding it back.

The reason for this is due to a major change Microsoft has added to the SkyDrive app in the form of a subscription model that lets users upgrade their storage by purchasing extra storage space. This is where Apple’s in-app purchasing guidelines kick in and where the main point of contention between the two companies is. Read more »
