Today isn’t only the day when the iPhone 4 hits it off (sort of) but it’s also the birthday of the latest and greatest Apple Mac mini, which now comes in an aluminum unibody and packs an HDMI port and an SD card slot and is said to deliver up to twice the graphics performance. Oh, and it still is as sleek as it’s ever been. Prices start from 700 US dollars.
The Intel Atom CPU is ubiquitous in the netbook world, but Intel is working on new designs that will improve on current netbooks and move into tablet and handheld territory. There’s that and a new upcoming architecture called Sandy Bridge, which would become the new high-end CPU from Intel…
There are two new Atom architectures that Intel is working at. The first one is dual-core Pine Trail processors (current Pine Trail Atoms are single core), which will deliver more than just improved performance (could it be the N500?). Read more »
Today Intel announced the dual-core i5-655K and quad-core i7-875K processors with unlocked core multipliers and made overclockers around the world tremble with excitement. Unlike most of their “unlocked” predecessors those will not be top of the line exclusive models that cost an arm and a leg.
The 3.2 GHz Core i5-655K will support Turbo boost up to 3.46 GHz and will cost 216 US dollars, while the 2.93 GHz Core i7-875K will go as high as 3.60 GHz in Turbo mode and will set you back 342 US dollars. Read more »
There have been rumors about Seagate releasing a 3TB drive this year but it just got officially confirmed. Barbara Craig, senior product manager at the company has gone on record saying that “we are announcing a 3TB drive later this year”.
You know deep down inside that the 3.33 GHz of computing power brought by the six cores of the Intel i7 980X Extreme edition CPU just doesn’t cut it anymore. That’s why you need Digital Storm’s latest gaming desktop computers that feature vertically cooled chassis design with three massive 180mm fans and industry leading Sub-Zero cooling system that permits overclocks of 4.4GHz or more.
AMD have just announced the latest additions to their lineup of Athlon II CPUs. The five new members start from the budget-minded 3.2GHz dual-core Athlon II X2 260, which should retail for 76 US dollars, and climb up to to the 3GHz quad-core Athlon II X4 640 (MSRP 122 US dollars).
All the new processors are compatible with the AM3 and AM2+ sockets. While I doubt that the Athlon II X4 640 will be able to match the performance of even the cheapest Intel i5 quad-core processor, it’s going to retail for almost half of its price, making it an excellent choice for multi-taskers on a tight budget.
I’m eagerly waiting for those benchmarks to come out and show what those new chips are capable of.
The high-end CPU market has been considered an Intel-exclusive territory as of late, but AMD are still not given up on it. The six-core AMD Phenom II X6 1055T CPU has hit the shelves exactly on schedule and is set to give the core 2010 processors a run for their money.
AMD has just unveiled their first twelve-core CPU chips. Whoa, impressive, isn’t it? Unfortunately, the new AMD Opteron 4000 and 6000 are CPUs with mainly server applications. They upgrade the current lineup of Opteron CPUs with more than twice the performance while keeping the same power consumption.
Microsoft demoed a cross-platform game during the TechEd Middle East 2010. The game ran on their three most popular platforms – Windows 7, Windows Phone 7 and Xbox 360 sharing the saved files between them.
NVIDIA posted a demo video showing the tessellation performance of their upcoming monster and first Fermi card – the GTX480. It surely overtakes the HD5870 in this regard, but I don’t know if it will be able to do so in other scenarios.
One of the first things I wrote for this blog was a looong post about the current gen tech for watching 3D movies in the comfort of your home. I’ll quickly revisit the topic with two new 3D-ready projectors from Acer.
The two projectors – the Acer H5360 and the Acer X1261 – rely on NVIDIA’s 3D Vision technology that uses LCD shutter glasses to view 3D content. If you don’t know what those are, check out the previous post.
Without any proper intro, NVIDIA launched the GeForce 300 family cards today. The series consists of five new models, which will be available only through OEM channels.
Intel is preparing a few new CPUs at the two extremes of their range – two new Atom CPUs and an Intel Core i7 with six cores. They have two things in common though – all three processors use DDR3 RAM and they are coming in Q3 of 2010.
I knew this will be happening eventually, but that kind of speed certainly exceeded my expectations. Apparently six-core CPUs will be flooding the market before the year has been halved. AMD and Intel both have plans of releasing those so regardless of your preferences it might be a good time to start saving.
According to DigiTimes Intel will hit first in march with its Core i7-980X. Read more »
As far as the current CPU trends go Intel is the company that provides top-notch performance for the ultimate configurations, while AMD aims at users on a tighter budget that are on the look for bargain prices. So the five new mid-range additions to the Athlon II and Phenom II lineups are hardly groundbreaking news.
The two highlights of today’s announcement are the AMD Phenom™ II X2 555 Black Edition processor and the AMD Athlon II X4 635 processor. The Phenom II X2 555 Black Edition is the fastest dual-core AMD processor to date, clocking at 3.2 GHz, yet it still maintains an affordable price of 99 US dollars.
