Acer announces Aspire S5 and Aspire Timeline Ultra Ultrabooks, claims the former to be the world’s thinnest

by 10 comments

Acer has announced two very thin and light Ultrabooks at CES. The first one is the Aspire S5, which Acer claims to be the thinnest in the world. The Ultrabook uses magnesium alloy and brushed metal for the body, which is only 15mm at the thickest point and weighs 1.35kg (2.97 pounds).

Another highlight of this machine is that it is one of the first notebooks to be announced with a Thunderbolt port and will be pairing it with USB 3.0 and HDMI ports on the back. Inside you will find Intel Core series processors, SSD storage and a PowerSmart battery pack that claims to have a life cycle which is three times longer than that of traditional battery packs. The biggest rumor was that the A700 would have a full HD display and thankfully that has come true. The A700 has a 10.1-inch, 1920 x 1200 resolution display, that’s the highest of any tablet available right now, including the current Android tablet champ, the ASUS Transformer Prime. Read more »

Nikon announces new flagship D4 DSLR, will burn a $6000 sized hole in your pocket

by 18 comments

Two years ago Nikon announced the D3s, which was to be their flagship camera then. That camera set the benchmark for low-light performance and had the competition struggling to catch up to it. Today Nikon is back with their new flagship DSLR, the Nikon D4, which improves upon the already excellent low-light performance of the D3s and this time, makes it even faster.

Speed is one of the highlights of the D4, which has a startup time of just 0.012 seconds. The D4 is also powerful enough to capture full resolution JPEG or RAW images at up to 10fps with full AF/AE or up to 11fps with locked AF/AE. The D4 also uses Nikon’s new 51-point Advanced Multi-Cam 3500 AF autofocus system, which is said to be faster and more precise than before. Read more »

Fujifilm announces mind-boggling twenty eight new cameras at once

by 37 comments

Haven’t anyone told these people about the CES? Well, anyway, it seems that companies aren’t waiting for the biggest consumer electronics exhibition to announce their new products. Fujifilm has joined that list of companies by announcing not four, five or ten but twenty eight cameras, all at once.

First is the X-S1, which seemed to have some confusion regarding whether it wanted to be a DSLR or a point and shoot when it was growing up so it decided to become both. The X-S1 has a very DSLR-like body and with all those buttons and dials would confuse most people into thinking it is one. But unlike DSLRs, the lens is fixed. Read more »

Lenovo gets busy, announces no less than nine notebooks

by 13 comments

You’d think that with CES so close Lenovo would have held on to these a bit longer, but it seems they couldn’t contain themselves any longer so they just went ahead and announced nine, yes, nine notebooks all at once.

The first one is a rather interesting hybrid notebook called the ThinkPad X1 Hybrid. The beauty of this machine is that along with Windows as the main operating system it also comes with Android that powers the notebook’s ‘instant on’ mode. The Android installation on the ThinkPad X1 Hybrid is a highly customized version of the OS and although you cannot run Android apps on it you can browse the web, play videos and music, read your mail and add widgets to the three homescreens. HP releases teaser video for the Envy Spectre, could be its next Ultrabook [VIDEO]

by 23 comments

HP has just released a teaser video for their upcoming HP Envy Spectre notebook. Being a teaser, the video doesn’t really show a lot but hints at the notebook being very thin, which suggests that we could be looking at HP’s next Ultrabook after the Folio 13.

Unfortunately, the rest of the details remain unclear. What will be the display size? What will be the hardware? How long will the battery last? We don’t know. All we know for now is that HP seems to be targeting the thin and light segment. Hopefully it will be something worthwhile.

Head past the break for the video. Read more »

Upcoming 7-inch ASUS Android tablet leaks through press image

by 14 comments

ASUS has so far limited itself to making only 10-inch Android tablets but it seems it will be entering into the more compact tablet segment soon and it will probably do so with the device seen below.

What we have here is a 7-inch Android tablet from ASUS. Unlike the previous two tablets, this one has a portrait orientation that goes better with this screen size. Judging by the UI it’s not clear whether it is running Honeycomb or Ice Cream Sandwich although I hope it will be the latter. Read more »

BlackBerry PlayBook goes out of stock in India following discount, RIM extends the offer by another week

by 18 comments

Looks like RIM is having a great start to the new year, at least in India. Following the massive price cut the Canadian company is having a hard time keeping the PlayBook in stock thanks to the great response from the customers.

As you may know, RIM announced a major price cut at the end of December that was to last till the end of the year. The prices for 16, 32 and 64GB models were slashed to $199, $249 and $399 respectively in the US but similar prices were found in other markets as well. After the price cut, and perhaps due to the limited nature of the sale, there was suddenly a large number of buyers for the tablet that was till now gathering dust on the shelves, with most of the retailers in India going out of stock within a day or two. In fact RIM sold over 12,000 units in the country in just four days after the sale was announced. Read more »

Sony drops Tablet S price to $399, throws in some freebies to go with it

by 34 comments

Last week we saw that Sony promised an Ice Cream Sandwich upgrade to all the Tablet S devices sometime this year. Seeing that may not be enough to entice buyers, they have now also dropped the price of the device by $100 across the board. The 16GB model now costs $399 and the 32GB model now costs $499.

But that’s not all. Sony is also throwing in some free stuff along with the price cut. Read more »

by 22 comments

ChevronWP7 Labs was the official jailbreaking tool available for Windows Phone devices other than the Microsoft AppHub. Unlike the latter, however, you did not need to pay $99 to unlock your phone but instead a lesser $9 for the token needed to unlock the device.

ChevronWP7 Labs has now announced that they will be selling only 10,000 tokens this year as that is the official figure that they have come up in agreement with Microsoft. After that they don’t have plans to create any more, although they did say they are still negotiating the number. Read more »
