Three different looks for the community designed Nokia U, voting now open

by 27 comments

Design by Community is nearing an end – it’s at the penultimate step, which by the way I find the most interesting. The fictional Nokia U was designed from the ground up by popular vote (including the name) and now as Nokia Conversations always promised they’ve released three sketches to pick the final design – again by voting…

A tale of winners and losers in the land of social networks: let the numbers speak

by 214 comments

Facebook just recently hit 500 million active users but not all social networks are enjoying its explosive growth. On the contrary, some older, established networks are beginning to fall out of popularity.

It’s also interesting to see how popularity of networks changes across borders – for example you may not have heard of Google’s Orkut, but in Brazil it’s bigger than Facebook. Also, people are beginning to spend more and more time interacting via social networks… Read more »

Unboxing the Nokia C6 – mass market texting, the Symbian way

by 939 comments

The Nokia C6 landed in our office and we did the unboxing tango with it. Nokia doesn’t have a great many phones that combine a touch screen and a hardware QWERTY – and that’s quite a popular combo, just look at all those Androids.

Nokia C6

Aside from the Nokia N97 and N97 mini, the Maemo-powered Nokia N900 was the other touchscreen/QWERTY phone. And now, there’s the Nokia C6 – 3.2” nHD touchscreen and a four-row QWERTY keyboard are its claim to fame… Read more »

Statistics geek: mobile web traffic by OS, Android OS distribution

by 661 comments

Statistics of mobile web usage often point to the iPhone as the king of the hill. The fine print however is that those statistics use data from the US only.

So, here are our two cents – web traffic from mobile devices to our site, which should give the other side of the story. It’s probably not 100% representative of the worldwide statistics, but at least it’s more global.

And while we’re in statistics geek mode, we’ll also take a peek at how Android OS versions are distributed… Read more »

Beta version of Opera Mobile 10.1 for Maemo offers faster JavaScript, features geo-location

by 9 comments

While promises of MeeGo are stealing all the spotlight, Maemo is not forgotten – certainly not by Opera. They’ve released an update for their Opera Mobile browser bringing it up to speed with the other platforms.

Unofficial info about the Asus 1215N release date and pricing surfaces

by 553 comments

The Asus 1215N netbook finally got a release date and some pricing details (though unofficially) – it’s coming in late August. But how much cash would the 1215N be, considering it has a 1.8GHz dual-core Atom CPU and an NVIDIA ION 2 (along with Optimus) beating in its chest?

Moorestown-based Aava developer platfrom phone shows off MeeGo 1.1

by 689 comments

A proper MeeGo device is still nowhere in sight, but the Aava phone is the next best thing – it’s a developer platform, meaning intended mostly for MeeGo developers rather than customers, but it gives us a look at how the MeeGo OS and MeeGo-powered devices might look.

There’s a lengthy video review along with an extensive photo shoot of the Aava phone running MeeGo 1.1. A lot of the things aren’t working yet, but there’s still quite some time before the market launch… Read more »

YouTube Leanback makes for lazy watching of lolcat videos

by 693 comments

Google is laboring away to keep us lazy – cool, right? The appropriately named YouTube Leanback is something like Google Reader Play, but for YouTube videos.

YouTube Leanback is the successor of YouTube XL and lets you kick back, relax and view videos from your subscriptions and videos your friends have shared on Facebook… Read more »

Custom firmware puts Android 2.2 Froyo on the HTC Desire, adds 720p video recording too

by 13 comments

You might think it’s unfair that HTC Desire still hasn’t been treated to an Android 2.2 Froyo update, while in the same type the Google Nexus One is basking in its Flash-enabled glory.

As usual, XDA-Developers might have a solution – a custom firmware for the Desire that not only brings Froyo with HTC’s Sense UI on top, but also offers one very sweet extra – 720p video recording… Read more »

Nokia Conversations asks what you do with the photos taken with your phone

by 1,125 comments

Last week Nokia Conversations asked its users what accessories they would like to have for their Nokia N8. Now the final results are out – phone jewelry lost, but what came out on top? Not what I voted for.

Anyway, now that that’s done, a new poll asks what people do with the photos from their phones… Read more »

by 14 comments

We may never see Flash on iOS, but that’s not stopping other OSes. The newer and less popular Silverlight, which is Microsoft’s alternative to Flash, is spreading to mobile OSes too – the Symbian^1 version just became available in the Ovi Store.

Acer Aspire One D255 netbook is powered by a dual-core Atom N550

by 5 comments

The first netbooks with Intel’s dual-core Atom N550 CPU are beginning to appear. The Acer Aspire One D255 is powered by just such a processor. It’s not the first netbook with a dual-core processor (the Asus 1215N has it beat here), but it’s the first with a dual-core Atom intented for netbooks (the 1215N uses a nettop CPU)…

Augmented reality games on mobile phones to become a true reality

by 242 comments

Qualcomm have a serious plan in action to make mobile gaming even better and more profitable. First is the Augmented Reality SDK they will release soon – free of charge along with a 200,000 US dollar developers’ competition.

The second part is even better and extends beyond AR games – the key word is interoperability. Specifically, make the games on several different platforms, connected in a peer-to-peer network for multiplayer gaming that is not limited to single platform… Read more »

Statistics says most Android apps are free, Microsoft needs to lure in more developers for WinMo

by 20 comments

Digging through statistics for the various app stores reveals interesting things about each platform – for example, Android is still the king of free apps, the most popular entries in the Apple App Store are almost exclusively games, and Windows Mobile still lives with it’s Mom, half of apps in the Windows Marketplace are written by Microsoft…
