The HTC press conference was one of the key events at this year’s MWC. The Taiwanese company announced five new smartphones and its official entry in the Tablet market with the HTC Flyer.

Pentax announces Optio WG-1 and WG-1 GPS rugged cameras, a silver K-5 DSLR

Pentax also joined the camera announcement party today in preparation for the CP+ camera show in Japan that’s due to start tomorrow. Pentax is throwing in a couple of rugged compacts and a silver version of their pretty successful K-5 DSLR.

As you could imagine, the WG-1 and WG-1 GPS are perfectly identical, but for the built-in GPS. Both are built around 1/2.33” sensors of 14 megapixel resolution and have 5x zoom f/3.5-5.5 lenses. The 28 – 140mm range covered is hardly spectacular, but still decent for the rugged league. Read more »

Olympus unveils the SZ-10, VR-330 and VR-320 superzooms and VG-110 budget compact

Olympus has a thing for superzoom compacts so it’s little wonder that three of their four camera announcements today belong in that category. Today the company lifted the curtain of the DSLR-like SZ-10, packing 18x zoom lens, the ultra-wide angle VR-330 and VR-320 that zoom up to 12.5 times and the affordable VG-110.

Canon EOS 600D and EOS 1100D aim at the entry-level DSLR market

Today Canon announced a couple of new additions to their DSLR portfolio. The 600D (or T3i in the US) is an update to the 550D, while the 1100D (T3) is a long due refreshment to the 1000D affordable-priced DSLR.

LG Optimus 2X IPS LCD vs Samsung I9003 Galaxy SL SC-LCD vs Samsung I9000 SuperAMOLED shootout

With both LG and Samsung pretty keen on bragging about their latest LCD display tech, we decided to put their latest devices through their paces and see how good they really are.

We have both the IPS-packing LG Optimus 2X and the Super Clear LCD-rocking Samsung I9003 Galaxy SL at hand so we set off to comparing and contrasting them. We even threw in a SuperAMOLED unit for good measure.

Mozilla releases an upgraded mobile Firefox for Android and Maemo, now speedier

Today Mozilla announced the availability of a new version of the mobile Firefox. Compatible with Android and Maemo the new version of the app is still in beta but promises to improve start-up and page load times as well as responsiveness to panning and zooming.

Facebook phone leaks again, confirms camera and GPS; Updated

It wasn’t too long ago that Facebook denied any interest in creating its own smartphone and yet here we have another rumor of the development of one. Apparently one of the Boy Genius Report readers was a part of the focus group for the upcoming device. And then there’s this other report that HTC will be revealing two Facebook-branded hadnsets at the MWC.

According to City AM HTC will be revealing a couple of Android handsets carrying the Facebook logo. They will be high-end devices with specially modified interface, that will bring the Facebook integration to a new level. Using your friends profile data to write an email or call them is among the rumored features.

Update: Facebook has just issued another public statement, denying they are working on such phones. They did confirm that HTC are making use of some new API to extend the Facebook integration in their upcoming smartphones. Those devices won’t be carrying the blue F logo, though.

The UK sees the Samsung Galaxy Tab get a price cut down to £360

Now I know you actually want to have the rumored Tegra 2-and-hopefully-SuperAMOLED-packing Galaxy Tab 2, but that won’t come out for a while now and chances are it will come out at a pretty steep price. So why don’t you check out this offer that Amazon.co.uk has for you?

The original Samsung Galaxy Tab is now available on the UK site of the company for a mere £360. That’s decidedly not bad for a device coming with a 7” SVGA screen, 1GHz Hummingbird chipset and 512 MB of RAM. Plus Samsung promised to update the Tab to Android 2.3 Gingerbread and 3.0 Honeycomb eventually. Read more »

WebOS-based HP Topaz tablet photos and specs leak, confirm dual-core Snapdraggon

Palm and their webOS were expected to be the next big thing in smartphones, but unfortunately the company ran out of money before it managed to make an impact. However now that they have the backing of HP there is every chance that the excellent OS will get the chance to prove its worth in the tablet world.

Some photos of the upcoming HP Topaz tablet leaked, along with the detailed specs sheet and it all looks pretty promising. Built around the Qualcomm MSM8660 Snapdragon platform, featuring two Scorpion cores running at 1.2 GHz and the new Adreno 220 GPU, the Topaz will have all the computing power it needs to run webOS on the 9.7” XGA (1024 x 768 pixels) screen. Asahi Glass introduces Dragontrail, Gorilla Glass is no longer alone

Corning and its Gorilla Glass had it easy so far – there just wasn’t any other product on the market that could match them. Yet today the Japanese company Asahi Glass introduced Dragontail, which promises to do just that.

Dragontrail is about six times tougher that the typical chemically-treated soda lime glass, which should make it perfect for protecting those precious capacitive touch displays. Read more »
