LG and Toshiba confirm tablet announcements for CES

It’s going to be hot on the tablet front at this year’s CES as another two major players confirmed they will be officially introducing Android slates at the show. Toshiba has just showcased the 10-inch Tegra 2-powered follow up to the Folio 100, while LG might be bringing not one but two Honeycomb devices.

The Koreans went on record, confirming their 8.9” tablet, which should run Android 3.0, but rumor has it that they might also give us a glimpse of another unit with a larger 10-inch screen. Read more »

Intel starts 2011 with a bang: 29 new Sandy Bridge CPUs are here

Intel used the first workday of 2011 to announce a fresh lineup of Core processors. The second generation of i3, i5 and i7 chips uses the Sandy Bridge architecture and so far includes no less than 29 CPUs.

All the new Intel processors are based on 32nm manufacturing process and boast improved performance plus better power efficiency. And it’s not just the reduced-size instructions that lead to it – according to Intel it’s also due to the L3 cache, which is now shared between all cores. Read more »

The Motorola Honeycomb tablet will go by Droid Xoom

Unless you’ve been living in a cave for the past few months you probably know that Motorola will be the manufacturer of the first Honeycomb-running tablet, that will see its official announcement next week at CES. What none of us knew so far was the name of the device, but now we’ve got that covered too.

The 10-inch Android slate will be called Motorola Droid Xoom, according to Droid-Life sources, close to the American company. Read more »

Samsung announces NX11 EVIL and WB700 superzoom compact cameras

Today Samsung announced a couple of new digital cameras that will be exhibited at CES 2011 expo, which will start early next year. The more interesting of the couple is the Samsung NX11 mirror-less camera with an APS-C sensor, which comes with the intriguingly sounding new i-Function. The other announcement is the WB700 compact with a zoom lens covering the ample 24-576mm range in 35mm equivalent, which even boasts RAW capabilities.

The i-Function of the NX11 EVIL camera allows you to change setting like shutter speed, aperture, exposure compensation, with balance and ISO straight from the lens. Read more »

Android Market welcomes AT&T direct carrier billing

The Android Market just got another update and now supports carrier billing in addition to the regular credit card payments. At this stage it only works for AT&T customers, but others are promised to follow shortly.

Angry birds update with Mighty Eagle and 15 new levels hits the Apple iPad

It’s finally here, fellas – the promised update to the game that has become a synonym for mobile gaming has just hit the App Store. It’s only available for the iPad version so far but the iPhone, and most probably other platforms, should follow soon.

The update brings 15 new levels and the new Mighty Eagle character that gives you a free pass through any level as long as you are willing to shell out a dollar. The Mighty Eagle will recharge over time so you won’t need to purchase it every time you use it (phew!). As we learned just recently there will also be a free mini-game involving the omnipresent bird. Read more »

Google reveals the magic that powers Google Maps 5.0 – vector graphics

A few days ago the Google dev team officially unveiled the latest version of their Maps mobile application. Later on they have decided to shed some light on the engine that powers the whole thing and have released a lengthy post about it.

For example, did you know that the new vector graphics consume more than 100 times less data than the previously used stitched images. It’s also the reason why offline navigation was made possible – it’s just that far less caching is required now. Read more »

Google Maps 5.0 lands on Android with vector graphics, 3D interactions and offline navigation

A major update to Google Maps has just hit the Android market. Version 5.0 of the Google digital map software brings in vector graphics, cool new 3D features and offline navigation.

So starting today instead of a series of small stitched together image tiles, Google Maps will be dynamically drawing vector graphics. This means that instead of pre-rendered images, Maps are rendered on the device itself, making scaling and transitions way smoother. Read more »

Opera 11 final version now available for download

Today opera released the final version of their latest Opera 11 desktop web browser. Despite introducing lots of cool new features such as tab stacking, extensions and visual mouse gestures it took this version less than a month to graduate from beta.

The key feature brought by Opera 11 is tab stacking allowing better management of your open tabs. All you need to do is drag one tab on top of another to create a new stack. Read more »

Sure, Ovi Maps is cool, free and with decent map coverage but it doesn’t cut it for everyone. Luckily, Sygic comes to the rescue providing a pretty decent alternative with its Mobile Maps 10 app.

Stuff like Gmail, Google Maps, Picasa, Latitude, etc. Well they wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for Google AdWords, which just turned 10. The Mountain View company’s flagship advertising product celebrated its birthday in style by dedicating an incredibly funny video to each of its clients (including a humble website not a million miles away from here).

Google Voice search gets updated, adds personalized results

The Google dev team just announced an update to their Voice search application for Android. Available for devices running version 2.2 (Froyo) or later the new version introduces personalized voice recognition, which should rapidly improve the number of successfully recognized search queries. What that means is that Google will pre-record your own voice so the service gets better in recognizing your voice commands.

To activate personalized search for Google Voice you need to make the update and tick the check-box in the settings menu. Read more »

Motorola 10-inch Honeycomb tablet leaks again, confirms a front-facing camera and Verizon allegiance

At this rate there won’t be much left for Motorola to announce when they eventually get round to unveiling their new tablet. The latest batch of leaked photos confirms that the Android Honeycomb-running slate will pack a front-facing camera and will be headed to Verizon.
