The act of queuing for a new Apple product has almost become an event in itself, a place for fans to reaffirm their excitement amongst each other. Asus announces two new Zenbooks powered by Ivy Bridge, FullHD screens in tow

by 75 comments

Asus announced two new ultrabooks powered by Intel’s oft-delayed Ivy Bridge processor. There are 11.6″ and a 13.3″ versions – Asus Zenbook UX21A and UX31A respectively. Either size will have a FullHD IPS screen – yep, that’s 1920×1080 resolution on a 11.6″ screen.

The IPS screens will offer 350 nits of brightness, but if they are too pricy for you, you can switch to a vanilla LCD screen instead. That drops the brightness to 300 nits and the resolution is downgraded to 1600×900 for the 13.3″ model and 1366×768 for the 11.6″ one. Read more »

iPad Mini rumors refuse to go away, promise smaller bezel and lower price this time

by 42 comments

This rumor is proving harder to kill than most fictional characters – I’m talking about the iPad Mini rumor. It reappeared again, just days after Apple’s official announcement of the new iPad when Apple’s exec made no mentions of any such thing.

The diminutive iPad is said to have a small bezel so that it can be about the same size as 7″ Android tablets (Kindle Fire, Galaxy Tab 2 7.0, etc.), while having a slightly larger screen diagonal – 7.85″ according to chitchat. Read more »

Super High Aperture: the technology that made the iPad retina display possible

by 95 comments

Addicted to that ultra-high res screen of the new iPad, aren’t you? Well here’s a bit more information about the underlying technology that enabled Apple to quadruple the resolution of its slate.

You see the main problem with high pixel densities is that when things get cramped up, signals can get crossed, which leads to degradation in image quality – most notably in terms of color accuracy and sharpness. So you actually turn out with a poorer screen. So how did Apple went about solving this engineering challenge? Read more »

Nokia to release a Snapdragon-powered 10″ Windows 8 tablet in Q4

by 121 comments

We’ve heard so many rumors of Nokia jumping on the tablet bandwagon that we are not sure what to believe anymore, but this latest bit sound rather plausible. The Finns are reportedly working on a 10″ slate running Windows 8, which should arrive to the market by the end of the year.

The Nokia tablet will be powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 chipset, featuring a couple of Krait CPU cores. The production of the device itself will be outsourced to the Taiwanese company Compal Electronics and initial volumes are said to be the rather modest 200,000 units. Read more »

Overwhelming demand depletes new iPad stock, shipment date for new buyers slides back

by 41 comments

The new iPad was announced last week with a planned launch date this Friday. Overwhelming demand has already pushed that date back, so if you haven’t pre-ordered already, the soonest you can hope to get the newest Apple tablet is March 19 (and there’s a two iPads per customer limit).

You could, of course, line up at a brick and mortar store, where you should be able to find the new iPad in stock on launch day (March 16). But that means joining an extraordinary long queue and being mocked by your Samsung-wielding buddies. Read more »

Here’s a music video that lets you choose the story and ending as you watch it

by 14 comments

American band Chairlift have released a new music video for their song ‘Met Before’. But unlike other music videos, this one actually lets you choose the events that occur in the video, which affects the story and the ending, like an RPG game.

The video starts with the main character (who is also the singer of the song, Caroline Polachek) as she follows two other characters in a class room. Right at the start you get the option to choose which one of the two you will pursue and then the video changes according. Later on, you are offered more choices that affect the way the video progresses and eventually ends. Read more »

Instagram coming to Android “very soon”

by 23 comments

Speaking at the SXSW today, Instagram founders Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger said that the Android version of the popular Instagram app is coming very soon. In fact, Systrom even said that in some ways the Android version of the app is even better than their iOS app and that it will be the most amazing Android app we’ll ever see.

Now we have been hearing about this Android version of Instagram for quite a while now when Instagram itself mentioned it on their blog a few months ago but we did not have any concrete date for the launch. Unfortunately, we still don’t have that yet but it’s nice to know that it will be coming shortly. Read more »

Nokia releases even more camera samples from the 808 PureView

by 83 comments

Ever since the big announcement at the MWC last month Nokia has steadily (and sneakily) released additional camera samples from the Nokia 808 PureView than what they showed at the event. We have covered some of those before but today we have some more to share with you.

For these bunch of photos, Nokia has moved from the rocky mountains to a sandy beach. As before these images are in bright sunlight so you cannot assess low light performance but it does give you a look at some of the other abilities of the camera. Read more »

Siine Keyboard helps you save time and energy with smart shortcuts

by 22 comments

Although there is no dearth of third-party keyboards for Android, this one in particular stands out from the rest due to the inclusion of some nifty shortcut keys that you can use to enter commonly typed phrases with just a single tap. The keyboard presents you with a bunch of icons, each of which has a handful of commonly used phrases assigned to it. You just press the relevant buttons and the phrases are automatically entered into the text box. With just a couple of clicks you can have an entire message ready to send. You get a whole bunch of icons with several phrases that you can customize and you can also download additional sets from within the app.

Another cool feature is the way it lets you enter time. Instead of typing out the entire time or date into a message you just click on the clock icon and select the time on the clock or the date you want on the calendar and the keyboard enters it for you in the text box. Read more »

New HTML5 version of iTether lets you tether to your phone using just the browser

by 27 comments

Last year, Tether submitted their iTether app to the App Store, which would let users tether to their iPhones even if the functionality was not available by default from the carrier. Although Apple initially allowed the app, it was later on removed, saying that the app burdens the network.

Now, however, Tether has come up with a new HTML5 version of iTether, which lets you tether to your iPhone using the Safari browser instead of a dedicated app. Read more »

Epic new Unreal Engine on Nvidia’s Next-Gen Kepler GPU, will blow your mind

by 68 comments

Epic are known for their Unreal Engine and the cool graphics it produces and at this years’ Game Developer Conference, the company made gamers drool once again. Why, you ask? The reason is a demo called “Samartian”, which isn’t terribly new, but this year looks especially stunning because it runs on a next-generation Nvidia’s Kepler GPU. And the graphics are just phenomenal.

At last years’ GDC, Epic used three GTX 580s just to run the demo, but now they are utilizing the power of just a single next-gen Nvidia Kepler graphics card and the results are mind-blowing. Read more »

Asus Padfone to cost 700 pounds in the UK, keyboard dock and tablet included

by 39 comments

Back at CES, Asus unveiled its $250 quad-core Memo tablet and got everyone quite excited by the possibility to have a powerful tablet with a proper OS on the cheap. Then came the cold shower and the news that the Memo won’t be available in the UK, as Asus believes the Padfone will be better suited to that market.

Those led some of us to believe that the Asus Padfone price will be at least close to what the Memo will be going for, but here comes another disappointment. According to reports, based on insider information, the Padfone will hit British stores costing £699.98. Read more »
