The Nokia Lumia 1020 is in a league of its own when it comes to mobile imaging – it trumps the competition in low-light conditions, heck it doesn’t do half bad against full-fledged shooters like the Canon 60D DSLR. It could only be challenged on a handheld phone by its brother in imaging technology the Nokia 808 PureView, although it still has the upper hand thanks to its optical image stabilization.

Canonical’s crowd-funding project, aiming to raise $32 million in order to make its Ubuntu Edge device a reality was off to a fast start, making $2 million in the first 8 hours, but it slowed down shortly after and it seems it stands little chance it will achieve its goal by August 21.

Now with the clear mindset of making the next 14 days count Canonical is slashing the price of the Ubuntu Edge (once as high as $775) to $695, citing cut manufacturing costs as the reason. Google has finally launched the web interface to their promised new service for Android users called Android Device Manager. The unimaginatively named service works similar to Apple’s Find My iPhone, Samsung’s Find My Mobile or HTC’s HTCSense.com and helps you track down your (lost) Android device.

To use the service you will have to head over to the Android Device Manager website. From there you can select your device from the list of recent devices you used with your account and the site will then try to locate your device (you will see the GPS activate on your device briefly as it reports its location). Once the site gets a lock on the device it will show it on the map in the background with the proper address on the side. Read more »

In the fairly long list of LG G2 features, there’s is a 13MP optically stabilized shooter, which pioneers 1080p video shooting at 60fps in the smartphone world. Sounds intriguing to say the least, and now, thankfully, we can see just how good the camera is by checking out a few samples.

Instagram has started rolling out the 4.1 update for its popular social networking app for iOS and Android. One of the key new features in this update is the ability to import videos from your library. 4.0 brought the ability to post videos but the videos had to be shot on the spot before uploading. This new feature lets you import and edit any previously shot video from your phone’s gallery.

Another addition is automatic straightening of shots. What this feature does is analyzes your images and automatically straightens them if it detects a tilt in the horizon. It also lets you manually adjust the image till you think it is perfectly level. This is an excellent tool to level your images after shooting if you think they are slightly tilted. LG is storming the Android hill once again with its latest flagship smartphone, the G2. Dropping the Optimus moniker doesn’t mean the company is skimping on features. Motorola made a big deal of the 10MP ClearPixel camera found on the Moto X and boasted about its low light performance to anyone who would listen. Twitter has updated their iOS and Android apps with a new form of two-step authentication. For those not aware, two-step authentication is where other than just using your password you have to approve a login request from another device before someone can log in to your account.

Twitter introduced two-step authentication a few months back for the web service but it is now available on the mobile apps as well. In this method, you no longer have to provide your mobile number for authorizing access to your account but the service instead sends push messages and in-app approval to authenticate a log in. WhatsApp has started rolling out a new update across the various platforms that prioritizes the voice messaging feature of the service. This move probably comes after other messaging services have started incorporating and promoting their voice messaging feature.

To be clear, this is not a new feature even for WhatsApp as the functionality was always available. The only difference is that now it is prominently placed in the UI with the latest update. Now, you’ll see a microphone button instead of the Send button when no message is being typed in the message field. Press and hold this button and your message starts getting recorded.
