Sony Xperia Z2 Tablet battery life test

The Sony Xperia Z2 Tablet is one of the hottest new pieces of Android hardware – it’s hard to believe how thin and light it is until you hold it in your hand. At 6.4mm thick, there’s not much room so the tablet uses a 6,000mAh battery, the same capacity as the previous model.

Snapdragon 801 is a power-efficient chipset (it’s in phones with less than half the battery capacity), but there’s still a 10.1″ screen, which would probably be the main power drain.

Speaking of the screen, it has 1,920 x 1,200 resolution, which should use less energy than 2,560 x 1,600 screen. It uses a proprietary Sony tech with blue LEDs and red and green phosphor instead of the traditional white LED backlight, so comparisons may be difficult.

There’s something else about the screen – it’s fairly bright at full blast (484 nits), but when you put the brightness slider in the middle (which is how we do battery tests), the screen dims significantly. The brightness hovers around 100 nits when the slider is at 50%.

We say “hovers” because even though the auto-brightness setting was disabled, the tablet starts adjusting the backlight strength according to ambient lighting conditions. We tested it on a desk next to a window during the day, so the brightness was approximately 100 nits.

That’s lower than most tablets at 50% – the Apple iPad Air goes to 180nits, while the Samsung Galaxy Tab Pro 10.1 to a high 310 nits.

With that in mind, the Sony Xperia Z2 Tablet posted great times on both the web browsing and the video playback tests, especially when you take into account the battery capacity.

The tablet jumps to the top of our Web browsing chart, beating its closes competitor, the Galaxy Tab Pro 10.1, by around three and a half hours and the iPad Air by two and a half. At higher brightness, the difference will melt and at Tab Pro 10.1′s 310 nits the Xperia Z2 Tablet will last a lot less.

The video playback time was also pretty great though not quite chart-topping. Still, at nearly twelve hours the Z2 Tablet is ready for a movie marathon. Here the iPad Air comes out ahead by an hour, the bright Tab Pro 10.1 is in front of the Xperia too.

The Sony Xperia Z2 Tablet lacks voice call support, so we can’t calculate our usual endurance rating, but it’s safe to say Sony made the best out of a 6,000mAh battery. They had to drop the brightness pretty steeply, but we did test with the power-saving options off so you might be able to squeeze out even more out of the battery.
