Expected to officially break the news to the world next Monday (April 23), Nokia will reportedly build a factory in Vietnam to speed up its device production rate.

According to sources quoting Niklas Savander, Executive Vice President of Markets for Nokia, the company will shell out a cool $300m to build the factory and will hire around 10 thousand people to work in it. Read more »

Yesterday we told you about Sony’s plans on lay off about 10,000 workers due to the expected $3.2 billion loss for the 2011 fiscal year. Unfortunately for Sony, however, now that we are coming closer to the final results being published, the expected loss has doubled to $6.4 billion.

The reason for this dark forecast turns out to be an unfortunate combination of not being able to defer taxes any longer and paying extra taxes because of shifting profits between subsidiaries. But Sony keeps its chin up. Read more »

HTC bought a controlling share in Beats Electronics a while back and started bundling premium Beats headsets with some of their phones and incorporating audio know-how into the phones themselves. Now HTC might be rethinking the practice and there might not be any more Beats headsets to be found in HTC retail boxes.

An HTC product exec, Martin Fichter, talked to CNET and said that headphones aren’t a deciding factor when choosing a phone. Read more »

Over the past few years microSD card manufacturers have mostly focused on increasing the capacity, rather than improving the speed, but as mobile chipsets improve, things are obviously starting to change. Samsung just announced that it has begun mass production of its first UHS-I microSD cards, which should deliver a significant increase in performance, compared to their regular counterparts.

The new 16GB memory cards come with a 20nm 64Gb chip with toggle DDR 2.0 support and an advanced Samsung controller, which enables it to achieve a maximum read speed of up to 80MB/s. That’s a quadruple increase compared to its predecessors, but naturally you’d need an UHS-I compatible device to enjoy it. Read more »

Sony Ericsson is a pretty big name in tennis – the Sony Ericsson Open just finished and it is a title sponsor of the Women’s Tennis Association. So, it came as a big surprise when it was announced that Maria Sharapova will promote Samsung products from now on (she was a Sony Ericsson ambassador for 4 years).

Currently, her deal covers only Russia and the Commonwealth of Independent States and is for three years. A new deal that covers the rest of the world might be signed next year. Read more »

When we reviewed the Sony Xperia S, we loved its 4.3″ LCD screen with HD resolution. It turns out however, that the display is far from perfect. Apparently, the unit develops a rather uncool yellow tint when the device warms up.

A recent study showed that US carriers are having a hard time keeping their customers, with the average users spending just over two years with one carrier. That’s hardly healthy for their bottom line as the hefty subsidies they pay take time to recoup themselves and the recent financial reports were quite clear about it.

Well, AT&T is obviously trying to do something about it and is launching a new AT&T Plus loyalty program. The exact details are yet to be unveiled, but the eligible customers will be getting a dedicated support line and won’t be charged upgrade and activation fees. Google has put up its website for the 2012 Google I/O developer conference in San Francisco. Registration for the event will be open starting 7AM PDT in less than too hours, too, with regular tickets costing $900.
