Designed in sunny California, the iPhone isn’t too good at handling the cold – in fact, Apple only guarantees it will work between 0°C and 35°C. Finns however encounter cold winters often, so a group of them started wondering – which phone will last the most in freezing cold?

Watch this amazing aerial video shot in the snow

by 8 comments

Snow is an awful thing, right? It slows down traffic, makes a mess of the sidewalks and makes the very idea of going out seem like a nightmare.

Except that it doesn’t always have to be like that. If you have lots of free time, a spark of creativity, warm boots and a multirotor RC helicopter at hand you might turn all that snow into art. Read more »

Sony just posted its financial report for the last year and its final quarter and things are looking pretty bad for the Japanese giant. The company missed targets and lost $2 billion in the holiday quarter alone.

This led to adjusting the company’s forecast for the full financial year (which in Sony’s case ends in March) – Sony is now expected to bring its total loss for the 12-month period to the mind-blowing $2.9 billion. Read more »

MicroOLED’s latest display has enough pixels to blow your mind

by 68 comments

First, I would like to note that a display with such specs will not will not find itself into a smartphone or a tablet in the foreseeable future. Given the fact however, that pixel density has become a real battlefield among the manufacturers of mobile devices lately, I do believe that MicroOLED’s latest display must be noted. As you are about to find out, it is entirely in a reality of its own.

Now on with those impressive numbers. MicroOLED’s engineers have managed to pack 5.4 million pixels into a 0.61″ display unit (Apple iPhone’s Retina display sports 614,400 pixels in comparison). Read more »

Meet ACTA, your worst Internet censorship nightmare since SOPA and PIPA

by 55 comments

Yesterday, 22 European countries ratified a little something called the Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement in Japan. The list includes Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxemburg, Malta, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden and the United Kingdom.

They joined Australia, Canada, Japan, South Korea, Morocco, New Zealand, Singapore and, of course, the United States, all of which had signed it October 1, last year.

The Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement or ACTA, as it’s more commonly called, doesn’t sound like much at first glance, but when you start reading into it and it won’t be long before you realize that it’s actually worse than the infamous US-only SOPA and PIPA put together.

Hidden behind the “Trade Agreement” part of its name, this international treaty has the potential to change the way we use the Internet forever. What it does is turn the attention from the suppliers of counterfeit and pirated products to the end consumers of those. You snatched your favorite TV show’s last episode of the torrents, did you? Well, you’re busted! It is that scary. Let’s break it down. Read more »

Samsung has releasing report of its Q4, 2011 earnings and the numbers are very impressive. For starters, the company earned 47.3 trillion Korean won (US$42 billion) in revenue and 5.3 trillion Korean won (US$ 4.7 billion) in profits.

Samsung’s mobile division saw a strong growth of 54 percent compared to last year, helped no doubt by the popular Galaxy S II, with 17.8 trillion Korean won (US$15.2 billion) coming from it. Unfortunately, Samsung hasn’t released sales figures so we have no idea about, say, the number of smartphones sold in the last quarter. Read more »
