Android custom ROM developers CyanogenMod have added support for yet another Android smartphone in their list of supported devices for their CM10.1 ROM. Starting today, you will be able to install CM10.1 on an Oppo Find 5 as well.

The Oppo Find 5 is one of the best Android smartphones available on the market today, with a 5.0-inch, FullHD display, quad-core 1.5GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor, 2GB RAM and a 13 megapixel camera part of the spec sheet. The phone comes with Android 4.1.1 as standard with a custom skin on top. Recently, HTC launched the developer edition of the HTC One in the US. This model was mostly identical to the model sold by the carriers, but comes with the network and the bootloader unlocked.

Now, HTC has provided the RUU (ROM Update Utility) and the full ROM for the HTC One developer edition on their developer website. This would allow users to restore their devices safely in case things go wrong while flashing custom ROMs. Read more »

BlackBerry’s Q10 QWERTY messenger will launch very soon and the BlackBerry World app store will greet it with a good selection of messengers (obviously, aside from BBM). This includes arguably the two biggest names in the game, Skype and WhatsApp.

After what seems like an eternity, Swype keyboard for Android is now finally out of its beta stage and available for download on the Google Play Store. The app is currently priced at an introductory price of $0.99.

For those who don’t know, Swype pioneered the sliding gesture-based typing method on phone keypads back in 2010. Since then this method of typing has been incorporated by several other keyboards, including the popular SwiftKey, and even built-in to several phones as standard. Read more »

According to a study by German Security firm AV-TEST Institute Google is a safer search engine than Bing. The study spanned across 18 months and included more than 40 million search results (read sites) and pit together Google, Bing and others like the popular Russian search engine Yandex.

Microsoft’s Bing delivered more than four times as many infected with malware websites than Google. The chart above shows the results – from almost 11 million results on Google around 272 were infected, while the same number of search results on Bing contained 1285 potentially dangerous pages. Samsung Galaxy S4, the recently launched flagship smartphone of the South Korean manufacturer comes with few unique and new features. One of the latest additions is the all new Group Play, which allows one master device to control a number of other NFC enabled smartphones.

Group Play allows you to do group music playback with several other smartphones and make a virtual sound system. The application also lets you share pictures and videos with other smartphones connected to the master device. Read more »

Late last year Nokia announced that it will be closing unauthorized access to Navifirm, the online repository of firmwares for Nokia phones. And that time has finally come. Navifirm was often a source of firmware for Symbian and later Windows Phone handsets before it was rolled out over the air, some times before it was even official.

Facebook unveiled its Facebook Home application for Android earlier in the month and it has been enjoying quite a lot of interest. The launcher, which replaces the normal homescreen with the Cover feed, has been downloaded more than 500,000 times since its arrival on the Google Play Store despite only being available to a few smartphones in several countries.

However, it looks like, Facebook Home has failed to impress the audience with its performance, as the average rating it got is 2.2 (on a 1 to 5 scale). Read more »

We’ve heard about this before but it doesn’t hurt to mention it yet again – Instagram is coming to Windows Phone. So says the official Nokia Sweden account on Facebook in response to one user. The response reads roughly like this – “Instagram is on the way but can’t give an exact date right now”. The comment has been taken down, which does add an air of legitimacy to the information (or just the opposite, depending how you look at it).

Last month, a Nokia Sweden account tweeted that an app for WP is under development, which fueled the users expectations. The question is – do Windows Phone users really care if Instagram is coming? Read more »

The LG Optimus 4X HD is fresh off its Jelly Bean update and has now received CyanogenMod 10.1 Nightly builds based on Android 4.2 Jelly Bean.

The release is said to be working good enough for a daily driver but as with all Nightly builds you should know that some things won’t be working properly or at all. Read more »

LinkedIn, the social network for suits, has updated its mobile apps on iOS and Android. Both apps now feature a brand new UI with a simpler and more attractive layout.

The new app features cards for individual posts, similar to the Facebook and Google+ apps. Clicking on the button on the top left opens a drawer on the left with your messages and notifications. There is a permanent search bar at the top and a button to leave a new post. Read more »
