Nokia takes us down memory lane, makes us all misty-eyed

by 332 comments

Ah, those were the days! When your phone weighed as much as your arm and cost as much as a body part. A time when if something went wrong, you’d probably have to sell your house to pay the mobile phone bill. A time when there weren’t many phones to choose from but most of them came from one manufacturer. One manufacturer that dominated the mobile phone scene like no other. That manufacturer was Nokia.

Nokia put up a post on their Conversations blog recently where they posted pictures of some of their older models, which had me reminiscing. Read more »

Samsung I9100 Galaxy S II thorough battery life test ready

by 80 comments

We are finally ready fellas – the full battery test of the Samsung I9100 Galaxy S II is complete. It took a week of extensive testing and comparing, but now we are ready to throw a load of numbers your way and hope they will be enough to quench your thirst.

The Galaxy S II convinced us that it’s a real beast during the review, but are the huge screen and powerful CPU and GPU too taxing on the battery? Well it turns out that they are not. The slightly larger battery (1650 mAh vs 1500 mAh) and the Gingerbread new, more aggressive stance against battery draining apps obviously have some effect and the Galaxy S II has a slightly better endurance than its predecessor, the original Galaxy S.

by 16 comments

I guess overclocking dual-core CPUs in mobile phones to 1.5GHz is normal now – a brave soul pushed the Tegra 2 chipset inside their T-Mobile G2x (a.k.a. LG Optimus 2X) to the breakneck speed, 50% up from the stock frequency.

AT&T officially to allow third-party markets, Infuse 4G to be the pioneer

by 0 comments

Remember when AT&T banned installation of apps from third-party markets on their phones and users were effectively left without access to the Amazon store, not to mention custom installs off a memory card? No? Well it happened and all of AT&T’s Android smartphone were declined access to the new app store. Now it seems that AT&T is “rethinking” and will allow installation of third-party apps on its future Android phones, starting with the Samsung Infuse 4G.

The things is here, AT&T doesn’t address whether older droids will get the same treatment via a software update or will be left in the dark. It would be unfair if they don’t. We can only assume only new phones will be able to install third-party apps, judging by this memo AT&T sent to developers. Read more »

by 132 comments
