Real-time video stabilization is available on both the Samsung Galaxy S III and the HTC One X. We already did a comprehensive shootout between those two, but we thought you might find it interesting how they fare in this particular challenge.

Both phones have 1080p-capable 8MP cameras and quad-core processors, but their video-recording capabilities are not exactly the same. Read more »

Samsung Galaxy S III comes with a new MHL port, HDMI adapters not compatible

by 43 comments

Here is a bummer. The flagship Galaxy S III has a redesigned MHL port and that’s incompatible with the previous HDMI MHL adapters available for other Samsung products.

The reason is very simple – despite the USB MHL port looks the same, the phone uses the connector pins in a different way. Thus your old MHL HDMI cables won’t work on the newly released S III. Read more »

by 38 comments

The Nokia 808 PureView just went on sale and we showed you photos of its first unboxing. Among the pictures you could see two of the optional accessories of the smartphone – the tripod mount and the protector case.

We assumed that you’d have to purchase those accessories additionally, but it seems Nokia will also offer the 808 PureView with an extended retail package, which includes them. Read more »

Leaked Nokia Belle FP2 screenshots show some new goodies

by 31 comments

The Nokia Belle FP1 rolled out in April we already knew back then that Nokia is already working on the FP2. And while we’re hoping this may be getting closer to release we got to see the first screenshots of this new edition of the mobile OS. Naturally, as with most other Feature Packs, the update brings some new features to the now elderly software.

As you can imagine, there’s no detailed changelog so far, but the upgrades suggested by the leaked screenshots include a redesigned keyboard, a new gallery (with share button), a new music player, a new search button in home screen toolbar, and a new unlock screen (by swiping). Read more »

New tactile display has buttons that rise out of the screen

by 52 comments

A new type of capacitive display allows any type of button to protrude from a touchscreen on command. When no longer needed, the buttons drop back down seamlessly into the screen.

Combining the best aspects of a touchscreen interface with physical keys, this Tactile Layer technology from Tactus could drive the final nail in the hardware QWERTY keyboard’s coffin. Read more »

Android getting offline Google Maps access, Google Earth for mobile getting bird’s eye 3D view

by 48 comments

At an event held today in the company’s San Francisco offices, the Google Maps team presented their latest and greatest achievements. The most important mobile news is that Android devices are getting offline access to GMaps. But there are other new things too – Google Earth and possibly Maps are getting a fly-by 3D view and we also saw the Google StreetView’s latest camera rig that’s meant to snap hiking trails and such, carried on… the back of a human operator.

The offline maps for Android bit is naturally of much higher interest to us than the other stuff, but you gotta know the new 3D view is also designed to be accessed on mobile devices such as tablets and smartphones. The new 3D view mode, similarly to the project by Bing Maps, uses image data captured by dedicated airplanes, which capture detailed images of metropolitan areas while flying over them in strict patterns thus providing greater degree of detail than was possible before. Qualcomm boasts its Snapdragon S4 thermal efficiency, compares it to the TI OMAP 4430 and the Exynos 4210

by 25 comments

Mobile chipsets’ processing power is improving unbelievably fast over the past few years, but unfortunately, this brings a lot of unwanted heat to the equation, which takes away some of the fun. According to Qualcomm, though, this needn’t be the case.

This is where their Snapdragon S4 SoC comes in, prepared to show how much cooler (literally!) it is than the TI OMAP 4430 (Motorola RAZR, competitor A) and the Exynos 4210 (Samsung Galaxy S II, competitor B) in a thermal shootout. Read more »

Samsung Galaxy S III and the Apple iPhone 4S enter a drop test, only one survives

by 218 comments

Samsung just brought the Galaxy S III to the market and it immediately had to face an Apple iPhone 4S in a drop test.

AndroidAuthority decided to redo the drop test from last year, when the Galaxy S II met the iPhone 4S on the sidewalk curb, and survived thanks to its Gorilla Glass screen. Now, the Galaxy S III comes with Gorilla Glass 2, so it’s interesting to see how it’ll fare in the same challenge. Read more »

Sony Xperia P battery life gets tested, 1305mAh found lacking by WhiteMagic screen

by 105 comments

The Sony Xperia P packs a special screen with WhiteMagic technology, which promises a lot of power-saving – up to 50% Sony says. But the other variable we need to consider here is the battery – and its meager 1305mAh capacity.

So, the screen may seem well suited to display web sites (which are predominantly white) with its white subpixels, but the battery is smaller than the one on a Samsung Galaxy S, which came out two years ago with a similarly-sized screen and a single core chipset. Read more »

The HTC One X moonlights as a hammer, lives to tell the story

by 53 comments

It’s becoming a bit of a trend this – using nails and hammers on smartphones. After the Nokia Lumia 900 display took some really painful hits, a guy from Russia decided that his HTC One X could do a lot better and decided to skip the hammer part all together.

So here we have this video where the HTC One X is used as a hammer, driving nails through wood. And the results? This is not the kind of stuff I would recommend for the faint of heart.
