The wearables market may have created a lot of buzz over the past few quarters, but looks like it will take some more time for that buzz to convert into genuine consumer interest. According to a latest research report from GlobalWebIndex, which surveyed around 170,000 adult internet users across 32 markets, only 9% said they have a smartwatch, and even less, 7%, said they own smart wristbands.

In contrast, around 80% of the people surveyed said they own a smartphone. While that’s undoubtedly a major chunk, it’s still less than the proportion (91%) using PCs. As for Android vs iOS, the data presented in the report puts the former far ahead of the latter (see image below). Read more »

Since it was announced, the Asus Zenfone 2 has been king of the hill in our popularity ranking. Besides popularity, the new phone is the first to come with 4GB of RAM – provided you get the higher-specced of the two versions. That one comes with an Intel Atom Z3580 with a quad-core CPU clocked at 2.3GHz.

China’s top smartphone player Xiaomi, which is also the world’s third-largest mobile handset vendor, is expected to launch its next flagship, allegedly dubbed Mi 5, this week. Previous rumors have indicated that the device will sport a 20- or a 16-megapixel rear camera, but some latest leaked photos (see below), which were allegedly taken using the device, suggest otherwise.

According to a report from GizmoChina, which first spotted the pictures, they carry the Xiaomi Mi5 name in their EXIF information, and were taken with a resolution of 4208×3120, which indicates that the device will sport a 13 megapixel camera. Read more »

You may remember Falcon Pro as the popular but ill-fated app on the Play Store that had to be pulled by the developer after it hit Twitter’s asinine API limit. The app has since then been available for free from the developer’s website, assuming you could work your way around the little easter egg to unlock and use the app.

The developer has now released a brand new Twitter app called Falcon Pro 3, which despite the name is not an update to the previous app but a new app altogether. The developer has made the app free to download but you will have to pay $3.99 to add the first Twitter account and every subsequent account will cost you $1.99 extra. Jide, a company founded by three ex-Google employees, have come up with a new Android-based tablet that is a straight-up clone of the Microsoft Surface.

The Remix Ultra tablet has a 11.6-inch 1080p display, unnamed NVIDIA 4+1 processor, and 2GB of RAM. It has a similar design to the Surface, with a kickstand at the back and a detachable keyboard that connects magnetically. Read more »

The AccuWeather app for Android has received an update which enables it to work on Android Wear smartwatches. The update is currently undergoing a phased rollout, so if you have the app and don’t yet have the new version, it should make its way to you within a few days.

Google has updated its Google app for Android to version 4.1.21.1657903, bringing several new features and improvements, including new Google Now card settings, as well as changes to OK Google settings.

The updated app now offers a new “Now cards” settings option that allows you to manage your card history, delete card preferences, manage notifications for card updates and show/hide cards. You can access this option by pulling out the slide-out navigation menu and heading to settings. Read more »

Mad Catz has announced a new gaming controller for Android devices. Called the L.Y.N.X.9, this is by far the craziest design I’ve seen for a controller and looks like something out of a Transformers movie.

MediaTek has announced a new chipset specifically for the low-power needs of Android Wear devices. Called the MT2601, this new chipset is designed to be smaller and more efficient than current chipsets.

The MT2601 has a dual-core 1.2GHz ARM Cortex-A7 CPU, Mali-400 MP GPU, and supports qHD resolutions, which should be plenty for something like a smartwatch. Most of the current Android Wear devices are based on the Snapdragon 400 SoC, a quad-core chipset designed for smartphones but has three of its cores disabled for lower power consumption on wearables.
