Samsung Galaxy Camera, which was announced at IFA trade show last year, was the company’s first attempt at an Android-powered camera, but its high asking price has steered quite a lot of people away from it. To address that Samsung has now introduced a cheaper version of the hybrid device.

The new model is simply a Wi-Fi-only (no 3G or 4G radios) variant of the Galaxy Camera and is indexed as EK-GC110. Read more »

Astonishingly, the root access of Sony Xperia Z has been successfully achieved before the smarpthone’s global launch. The Sony Xperia Z has just yesterday hit French shelves, with the rest of Europe expecting to get it in two days, but DooMLoRD, a recognized developer at XDA has already managed to gain root access on the smartphone.

According to the developer, the modification of the CF-Auto-Root for the Nexus 4 has worked on the Xperia Z smartphones and has helped him achieve the root access. Read more »

The Samsung Galaxy Note 8.0 has leaked so frequently in the past couple of months (heck, even Samsung’s head of Mobile Communications confirmed it), that the device may as well be out already.

The latest news about the compact tablet is that it’s set to hit retail in Europe at the end of March for around €359 for the WiFi only version (€449 if you throw 3G into the mix). Compare this to €329 for the iPad mini (€429 with 3G), and you can see that Samsung aim to directly compete with the smaller iPad with their upcoming product. Read more »

According to the sources at 9to5Google, Google will be opening its own chain of retail stores in the US by the end of the year around holiday shopping season.

This move may have come across as a surprise a couple of years ago, but with the advent of the Nexus devices and the Chromebook, along with upcoming devices such as Project Glass, a retail chain of stores is just the thing that the company needs. Read more »

Samsung recently started rolling out the Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean update for the Samsung I9100 Galaxy S II to give it the same Nature UX experience as its successor. Now, the Koreans have open sourced the kernel used for the update, which will help developers of custom ROMs.

Samsung has steadily been releasing source codes for the kernels used on its phones (the Galaxy S II ICS kernel was released in March), trying to play nice with the developer community. Read more »

Archos made its new line up of Platinum tablets official. And yes, the name does sound familiar as one of them was even showcased at CES last month, but obviously the French manufacturer consider that unofficial. Anyway, all the latest tablets in the Platinum range have high-end hardware and mid-range pricing so they might turn out to be quite interesting offerings.

As expected, all the tablets will be powered by a 1.2 GHz quad-core processor with 8-core GPU along with 2GB of RAM. They will all offer rear and front cameras, HDMI and microSD support. Read more »
