8GB Nexus 7 tablet parts estimated to cost $184

by 37 comments

It was iFixit that first tore down the Nexus 7 tablet and as a result we can now see how much money Google is making from selling the device itself.

For the 8GB model, the margin is pretty slim (if it exists at all) as its parts were estimated to cost $184 while it sells for $199. That’s a small profit margin whichever way you look at it, and this price doesn’t even factor in manufacturing, marketing, shipping or research and development. Read more »

by 60 comments

If you had asked me a couple of weeks ago which was the ultimate mobile gaming device, I’d say the PlayStation Vita in a heartbeat. But who needs a PlayStation Vita when you can just use your Samsung Galaxy Note and a wireless PlayStation 3 controller and get something even better.

As you can see, one owner of this Galaxy Note has decided to do just that. Rather wittily he has made a special holder for the Note, which is attached to the back of the PS3 controller. Read more »

Voice Search on Jelly Bean teaches Apple’s Siri a thing or two about web search

by 64 comments

At the announcement of the latest iteration of Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, Google unveiled their updated Voice Search engine. It’s not exactly a virtual personal assistant but we decided to just go with it and see how it stacks up against one of the best ones out there – Apple’s Siri.

Google’s Voice Search in Jelly Bean, as its name suggests, is limited at doing web searches, and setting up the occasional alarm.
