A leaked roadmap for the Tegra 4 has spilled some beans on Nvidia’s next generation mobile SoC. Assuming this image is authentic, we won’t have a Tegra 4 device with us before the first quarter of 2013, meaning Nvidia is not quite keeping up with its promise of delivering a new Tegra processor every year.

The first model to come out will be for flagship devices and will use the ARM Cortex A15 processor in the 4-PLUS-1 configuration and clocked at 1.8GHz. The next flagship processor will be out in Q3 and will take things up a notch by increasing the clock speed to 2.0GHz. Read more »

Microsoft’s controversial Smoked by Windows Phone challenge has now been extended till April 12. If you want to pit your smartphone against a Windows Phone, all you need to do is hop down to the nearest Microsoft store and if you win, you will get a $1,000 special edition Hunger Games laptop and a $1,000 gift card.

The Smoked by Windows Phone challenge recently came under fire after a Microsoft store denied a blogger his prize even after he won the competition fair and square. Eventually Microsoft stepped in and righted the wrong, giving the guy his laptop as well as a free Windows Phone, but the damage was done and a few things about the competition came to light, such as the way the Windows phones used in the test are already set to gain an advantage in that particular test and by profiling the competing handset and then avoiding tests in which the Windows Phone might end up on the losing side. MOBOTAP has updated its Dolphin Browser for iOS to version 4.0. The main feature in this new update is Dolphin Sonar, which lets you do things like searching the web, sharing links on social networking sites, adding bookmarks, etc. using just your voice.

Other additions include the URL keyboard, ability to quickly switch between four different search engines, night mode, ability save images directly to your phone’s photo library, additional font size options and general stability and performance improvements. Read more »

Since its launch in December 2011, the ASUS Transformer Prime has been hailed as the best Android tablet on the market and you could even see it in its sales figures which, the Kindle Fire and the Nook Tablet notwithstanding, were the best in its class. However, other than popularity and success the tablet has also had to deal with rather crippling GPS connectivity issues.

As we discussed before, the problem arises due to the all-metal shell used for the back of the Transformer Prime. Metal is known to block radio signals, which is why you will see devices like the iPad with a full metal back having a plastic patch on top for the radio antennas. ASUS tried to fix the problem with a few software tweaks but it seems neither of them have worked really well. Developers TouchType Ltd. have spawned another version of their popular and award-winning SwiftKey keyboard for Android. The version 3, which is still in beta, has now been released for its VIP community members in smartphone and tablet versions.

So what’s so great about this new version? For starters, the keyboard has now been optimized for Ice Cream Sandwich and comes with new themes that go with the Holo theme on ICS. Panasonic has officially announced the LUMIX GF5 camera, which just like the other GF-series cameras that came before it, belongs to the Micro Four Thirds category. This compact, mirror-less camera comes with a new 12.1 megapixel Live MOS sensor and a redesigned Venus Engine processor. The GF5 is capable of shooting in sensitivities as high as ISO 12,800.

The LUMIX GF5 uses a sensor-based Contrast AF, which is said to be more accurate than Phase difference AF systems. It also offers full-area focusing, so you can set the auto focus at any point in the field of view instead of relying on pre-set points as seen on DSLRs. Read more »

When Samsung announced the Galaxy Tab 2 range, which includes the 7-inch and the 10.1-inch models, the launch date was pegged sometime last week, at least in the UK.

As is obvious, the two products did not make it within the promised launch but now we know the reason why. A Samsung spokesperson told Computerworld that the reason that the launch of the two tablets has been delayed is due to Samsung taking its time working on Android 4.0, presumably implementing its TouchWiz UI on top. Yesterday, Sony issued a firmware update for the PS Vita, which took the version number to 1.65. Among the list of changes included ability to disable certain notifications, such as when friends sign in, messages are received, etc., ability to set the auto standby timer to ‘After 10 Minutes’, arrow for indicating when new activities are available in LiveArea, and the inclusion of Caps Lock for the on-screen keypad.

However, it seems there was some issue with this update, due to which Sony had to pull it down shortly after it went live. Read more »

After seven years since the EOS 20Da came out, Canon has released a successor to its special class of DSLR cameras geared towards capturing the wonders of the night sky in the form of the EOS 60Da.

The new EOS 60Da packs a 18 megapixel APS-C CMOS sensor, which is greatly improved over the 8.2 megapixel sensor on the 20Da. It features in improved infrared-blocking filter for better hydrogen-alpha light sensitivity, which is three times greater than its predecessor. The EOS 60Da can capture images in sensitivities as high as ISO 12,800 and has a nine-point auto-focus system. Read more »

Now that’s a bit of a surprise. After berating the new iPad for its heating and charging issues, the Consumer Reports now thinks that the iPad is the best tablet on the market.

In case you haven’t followed the entire saga, Consumer Reports first reviewed the new iPad when it came out and showered it with praise. A few days later, they followed the review with a sensational article as to how the new iPad was running uncomfortably hotter than its predecessor and how it refuses to charge while you are using it. And now, a few days later, Consumer Reports is going back on its initial claims and praising the new iPad again for its excellent all-round performance. Read more »

Depressing as that number is, it’s true. RIM’s new CEO, Thorsten Heins just revealed during his company’s fourth fiscal quarter earnings call that the company’s first attempt at a tablet ended up in the hands of just over a million people since being on sale for almost a year now.

This is of course the actual units sold and not the shipped figure that most companies tout. If you are looking for the number of shipments, then RIM says that it is just over 500,000 for the last quarter alone. Considering that’s half of the total units sold all last year, I’m guessing most of them are still sitting on shelves. Read more »

We have been hearing rumors about Google planning to get serious about the tablet segment by launching its own branded Android tablet this year. Eric Schmidt himself said a few months ago that Google plans to bring a tablet of the highest quality to the market in the next six months.

The Wall Street Journal is now reporting that Google will be selling co-branded tablets on its own online store, just like it used to with the original Nexus One. This is an interesting move because if you remember, Google had to shut down that service and move to retail-store only as it wasn’t working out well. Read more »

Amazon has pushed the 6.3 update to Kindle Fire. One of the new features that have been added is the ability to share the contents of the book that you’re reading. Users can highlight a particular passage from a book and then share it on a social network of their choice, without having to leave the book. These passages will also be available to other Kindle readers reading the same book.

Another new feature is Book Extras. It provides the user with additional content on a particular book, such as description of the characters, information on the author, etc. and is powered by the community driven book encyclopedia called Shelfari. Think of it as the special features in a DVD, but for your ebooks. Read more »

Arguably the best looking custom ROM available for Android, MIUI has often been compared to iOS due to the general UI design, which includes stuff like the lack of an application drawer, a feature standard on Android since the first version. Read more »
