You may have seen projection clocks, but what if you could wear one of those on your hand? That’s what the makers of Ritot are campaigning for on IndieGoGo – a smart band that uses a projector to cast a big, readable notifications on your wrist.

The Samsung Galaxy K zoom packs a 2,430mAh battery, less that you would imagine looking at its bulk. Still, Samsung has had a few iterations to optimize its Exynos chipset for great power efficiency and the Galaxy Note 3 Neo got great results with the same chipset (but bigger battery).

We threw the new Samsung Galaxy S5 mini into the pit of ravenous Android minis and they were not kind to it. The previous mini battle saw the HTC One mini 2 win a decisive victory over the Galaxy S4 mini and while Samsung’s latest flagship mini put up more of a fight it just wasn’t enough.

New version of Play Store might allow data restoration from specific devices

Have you ever had this happen – during the initial setup of an Android device, you tap the restore option and the OS starts reinstalling all sorts of apps you had on your old devices, including many you don’t need? Google might be working on a more intelligent restore option that will allow you to select a backup from a specific device to be restored.

Samsung 850 PRO SSDs prices unveiled, start at $130

Samsung unveiled its new 850 PRO SSDs a week ago and now we have the official prices of the new drives. They are built using a 3D V-NAND technology, which improves performance and energy efficiency. The drives achieve 550MB/s reads (100K IOPS) and 520MB/s writes (90K IOPS).

The 850 PRO series is launching in 53 countries in capacities ranging from 128GB to 1TB. Read more »

Sony tells the history of the selfie, self-promotion since 1839

To celebrate the launch of its selfie phone, the Xperia C3, Sony has dived into the history of the selfie and distilled the info into an easy to digest infographic. If you think “selfie” is a recent fad, you’ll be wrong – one Robert Cornelius took the first selfie in 1839.

This Victorian selfie wasn’t snapped with a cell phone in the bathroom mirror, obviously, Cornelius used the daguerreotype process. Read more »

Amazon.com drops 10″ Asus VivoTab RT TF600T tablet to just $175

The Asus VivoTab RT TF600T is getting on two years old now and Amazon is clearing out its stock by slashing the original price to just $175. The Windows RT platform is drying up on the vine, but getting a 10.1″ tablet under $200 is still a pretty good deal.

Huawei Honor 6 taken apart, given good repairability score

The recently announced Huawei Honor 6 flagship isn’t even on the market yet but some industrious folk got their hands on it and did what comes natural to tech geeks – they took it apart. While it’s not coming from iFixit the people who took apart the Honor 6 (also called Glory 6 in some markets) awarded it a 7/10 separability score.

The teardown photos reveal the back material can take some abuse, but the battery is not easy to take out. Read more »

Jolla Launcher unofficially ported to Android 4.2

Jolla released an alpha version of its Android launcher for testing but you need to sign up to gain access and it only works on Android 4.3. As can be expected, the XDA-developers forums already have the original APK plus a version for Android 4.2.

Apple adds camera to iPod Touch 16GB, drops the price of the entire range

In a surprise move Apple quietly updated its iPod touch lineup. The entry-level 16GB version got a big update, while the whole lineup got a price cut.

The iPod Touch 16GB was unveiled just over a year ago and it was a stripped down version with no camera or color options. Now, Apple has made it an equal citizen. Read more »

Jolla Launcher for Android now available for alpha testers to download

The sign up for alpha testers of the new Jolla Launcher has almost drawn to a close and those who signed up can now download the custom Android homescreen. Jolla wants to give users a taste of the gesture-based interface of Sailfish OS without having to buy the Jolla phone.

This initial version of the Jolla Launcher targets Nexus 4 and 5 owners, but it supports any Android 4.3+ device. You still have a day left to sign up for the alpha test program. Read more »

NVIDIA’s Tegra K1 powered the Android TV and Auto demos yesterday

Since yesterday Android runs on just about anything – TVs, cars and new 64-bit enabled devices. NVIDIA provided the power for yesterday’s demos, the company revealed that both the Android TV devkit and the Android Auto demo were powered by a Tegra K1 chipset. The Project Tango tablet devkit (which was on the showroom floor) also uses K1 for its advanced computer vision.

Android L has full support for 64-bit processors like the ones inside the Tegra K1. Read more »

Chromecast to get screen mirroring, other new features

The upcoming Android TV seemed to threaten the very existence of Chromecast, but Google seems rather attached to it as it announced cool new features for its highly popular HDMI stick. The most important new feature is screen mirroring, which lets you display any app on your phone or tablet on your Chromecast-enabled TV (is this the end of Miracast?).

Chromecast is also easier to set up for casting from your friends’ devices – they no longer need to be connected to your Wi-Fi network. Read more »

Android apps will soon run on Chromebooks, notifications will be shared too

Google introduced Android on just about any platform you can think of so naturally the company is bringing Android to Chrome OS and the Chromebooks. It’s just the early days, but Android apps will run on Chromebooks with minimal changes from the app developers.

Integration with your phone goes beyond just running apps too, similar to the new Mac OS X Yosemite you’ll receive call and message notifications on your Chromebook. Read more »

Opera will be the default browser on the Nokia X phones

Opera has a long-standing partnership with Nokia to provide a browser for its phones – it used to be Opera Mini on Series 40 nowadays it’s the full-fledged Opera Mobile on the Nokia X platform (Nokia’s premium WP platform is of course serviced by IE).

Opera will be the default browser on Nokia X phones, starting with the new Nokia X2, and it’s available for free download for current X owners. Read more »
