50 Cent says he needs a cameraphone, Nokia sends him a Lumia 1020

Did you know that 50 Cent used to have a BlackBerry? That’s old news now – at an interview at CES the rapper mentioned that he switched to an iPhone because that’s where “all the cool stuff” is and mentioned the camera will be the primary consideration when he starts looking for a new phone.

Someone at Nokia’s marketing team caught wind of that and, of course, sent 50 Cent a Nokia Lumia 1020. Read more »

LG G Pad 8.3 gets a price cut to £199.99 in the UK

UK retailer Expansys has cut the price of the extremely capable LG G Pad 8.3 tablet to £199.99.

Sony considers selling its Vaio PC division

According to e report by Nikkei, Sony is planning to sell its Vaio division which designs and manufactures personal computers. The move is dictated by the business unit’s poor performance, as well as the Japanese giant’s desire to shift its focus on smartphones.

Sony will reportedly sell its PC business to the investment fund Japan Industrial Partners with the estimated price ranging between ¥40 billion and ¥50 billion ($391 million to $489 million). Read more »

ARM reports lower than expected revenue due to fewer smartphone sales

British chip designer ARM, who licenses its technology to mobile chip makers like Qualcomm and Samsung in exchange for royalties, has reported a slowdown in Q4 royalty revenues due to lower than expected high-end smartphone sales.

Last month, Samsung and Apple each reported lower than expected sales of their flagship iPhone 5s and Galaxy S4 devices – both of which contain ARM technology inside. Read more »

Satya Nadella sends first email to employees as Microsoft CEO

Satya Nadella stepped in as CEO of Microsoft effective immediately and his first email to employees sets the tone for his reign. Analysts describe him as a safe pick and it shows – Nadella has asked Bill (he’s on a first name basis with Mr. Gates) to “devote additional time to the company, focused on technology and products”.

The new CEO won’t be hiding behind the back of the original one though, he points out specifically mobile and the cloud as areas of great interest for the company (he was in charge of Microsoft’s Cloud and Enterprise division). Read more »

Samsung Galaxy Gear gets a $125 discount globally

Samsung has cut the retail price of the Galaxy Gear smartwatch. The gadget was launched back in September and even though it’s the best spec’d wearable on the market, Galaxy Gear remained rather unpopular because of its hefty price tag.

Samsung has released Galaxy Gear worldwide and it was priced at $300 for the USA, €300 in Europe and Rs. 22,290 ($356) in India. Those prices were rather steep indeed, but that’s about to change now. Read more »

SA: Samsung’s Galaxy tablets overtake Apple’s iPad in developing markets

Samsung has secured the smartphone crown and it was clear the next battle with Apple will be over tablets. Strategy Analytics reports that Samsung is catching up to Apple by overtaking the iPad maker in emerging markets.

Apple had the biggest market share in 2012 in all markets, but in 2013 Samsung pulled out in front in Central and Eastern Europe (25% market share), Latin America (22.8%), the Middle East and Africa (18.3%). Read more »

Samsung and Phones 4U partner to launch 15 stores in the UK

Samsung continues its rapid European retail expansion, adding 15 new retail stores in the UK. Today, the company announced it has struck a deal with UK retailer Phones 4U to manage 15 Samsung stores in the country.

Just last week, the Koreans announced a similar partnership with Phones 4U rival Carphone Warehouse, which includes 60 Samsung stores in Europe, 20 of which will operate in the UK.

Paper by Facebook is now on the App Store

A few days ago, Facebook announced their new mobile app called Paper. Paper combines your regular Facebook feed along with news from different sources in a radical new design that is a complete departure from anything Facebook has ever made. The app is now available for download for free on the iPhone in the US.

Paper is that new Facebook app that you always wanted but it does more than just give you a new design. The developers have found a way to also incorporate news from different sources, similar to the Flipboard app. You can add categories you want to get posts from and you’ll get a curated list of content that fits the bill. Click on a post you want to read and it flips open like a newspaper. If you just want to go through your Facebook feed, you can do that as well. Read more »

Grand Theft Auto 5 claims the honors for best-selling game of 2013

Grand Theft Auto 5 is last year’s best-selling video game. Take-Two Interactive Software Inc., the company who owns the wildly popular gaming franchise announced the achievement during its 2014 fiscal Q3 earnings report.

The news should hardly catch anyone by surprise, as the game racked up more than $1 billion in sales in its first three days of official availability. Read more »
