Nokia Lumia Black software update features overview

There’s a hands-on video showing off the features of the Nokia Lumia Black software update on the inter-webs. In it, a Nokia rep goes over all of the new things your Nokia Lumia smartphone can do.

The first feature they show off is the new and improved “glance mode”. There are now new notifications that you can see on the ‘always on’ screen of Lumia smartphones, without having to wake your phone.

There’s also an updated Nokia Camera app, that allows for three shooting modes: Video Recording, Nokia Camera, and Nokia Pro Camera. With the Pro Camera mode, you can fidget with light sensitivity and other camera settings more in-depth, as well as get a preview of the photo before you actually take it. Read more »

Samsung releases two exclusive new Windows Phone apps

When you talk about Windows Phone devices these days, you can only think of Nokia, with others such as Samsung and HTC having nearly been wiped from our memory. But turns out Samsung still cares about the handful of Windows Phone devices it made (or perhaps this is the reason).

Samsung has launched two new apps that are exclusive to its own Windows Phone 8 devices. The first one is called Share Box, which works over DLNA and lets you share multimedia content with other DLNA compatible device. The second app is called Samsung Link, which will allow you to play content stored on other registered devices remotely over an internet connection. Read more »

‘Temple Run 2′ finally arrives on Windows Phone 8

After what seems like an eternity, Temple Run 2 has finally made its way to the Windows Phone Store. The game is now available to download for free on devices running Windows Phone 8 and have at least 1GB of RAM.

Temple Run 2 is the much acclaimed sequel to the original Temple Run that pretty much started the endless running genre on the mobile platform. Grand Theft Auto San Andreas enters the Android’s Play Store

Just a week after we saw Grand Theft Auto San Andreas hitting the Apple’s App Store, the game is now available on Android’s Play Store as well.

WhatsApp now has 400 million active users

Jan Koum, the CEO of WhatsApp has announced that the popular messaging service now has about 400 million active users across the globe.

WP8 finally gets Xbox Video, while Xbox Music becomes a standalone app

Microsoft has finally released he long awaited Xbox Video app for Windows Phone 8. The service has been available on Windows Phone 7 devices since the dawn of the Windows Phone platform, but until now WP8 users were left waiting for a compatible release.

Windows Phone Store reaches 200,000 apps

The continued efforts from Microsoft is paying off as the Windows Phone Store hit 200,000 apps just a few days ago. From modest beginnings in 2010, to 100,000 apps in June last year to double that just in time for the holidays this year.

Microsoft will be releasing $100 million worth of gift cards to 100 retailers across 41 markets to make it easier for users to buy apps (i.e. receive a gift card for the holidays). Read more »

Nokia Camera app comes to low-end and mid-range Lumias in beta form

The Nokia Camera app unified the creative features of Smart Camera and the manual controls of Pro Camera. It was made available for high-end Nokia Lumia phones a couple of months ago, but now the app is available in Beta for the low- and mid-range Lumias too.

This means support for the following phones: Lumia 520, Lumia 521, Lumia 620, Lumia 625, Lumia 720, Lumia 810, Lumia 820, and Lumia 822. Note that you need at least Nokia Amber installed, preferably Nokia Black. Read more »

Pebble smartwatch gains Windows Phone support through an unofficial app

The popular Pebble smartwatch received Windows Phone support via a third-party solution called Pebble Watch Pro. Created by Bad Planet Software, the application is geared towards Windows Phone 8 devices.

Despite not offering the full experience, the unofficial WP app allows users to receive a number of useful alerts from their device to a Pebble smartwatch. Read more »

‘Angry Birds Go!’ for iOS, Android and Windows Phone 8 game review

After teasing the game a few months back and doing a soft launch in New Zealand, Rovio finally launched Angry Birds Go! internationally across all major mobile platforms. Angry Birds Go! is the first 3D Angry Birds game and features go-kart racing along the lines of Mario Kart and Sonic Racing.

Rovio certainly has a popular franchise on its hands. Let’s see if it can successfully shoehorn it in a completely different genre the way Nintendo and SEGA did. Read more »

Nokia releases beta Motion Tracking App for Lumia 1520

When Nokia announced they were selecting Windows Phone as their mobile operating system of choice, the Finns made it clear that they would create applications that made their handsets stand out. Nokia continues to deliver on that promise with the announcement of their Motion Monitor App for the Lumia 1520.

What’s interesting about the app is that there is no need to manually launch it: Motion Monitor simply runs in the background, tracking your steps and movement. Since it is integrated into the 1520, live tile support is included, so you can see your physical activity results in real time right on your homescreen. The app also offers more detailed reports, which you can then break down in a variety of ways. Read more »
